When was the last time a player withdrew from a quarter-final of a ranking tournament (NOT, as Ronnie did, midway through but by pulling out before the start of the match, having won the previous match)?
And the one before that?
First answer with both correct wins the point. I want the player's name and the tournament (year and title), and for no bonus points at all, the opponent who gained a semi-final spot from his withdrawal.
We have had the first half of the answer, Higgins v. Dott, so when was the previous one?
Congratulations Cyril and Alex. The last player to withdraw from a ranking tournament in the quarters or later, before O'Sullivan last week, was Higgins in 2000 (½ point to Alex) and the previous time was Dennis Taylor in 1984 (½ point to Cyril).
