            ROUND ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN

When was the last time a player withdrew from a quarter-final of a ranking tournament (NOT, as Ronnie did, midway through but by pulling out before the start of the match, having won the previous match)?

            And the one before that?

First answer with both correct wins the point. I want the player's name and the tournament (year and title), and for no bonus points at all, the opponent who gained a semi-final spot from his withdrawal.

We have had the first half of the answer, Higgins v. Dott, so when was the previous one?

            Comment

            • Higgins-Dott in 2000 Grand Prix.

Dennis Taylor withdrew from the Jameson in '84, following the death off his mother. Silvino Francisco received a walkover.

Dennis played in the next event, the Rothmans Grand Prix - winning his first major tournament.

              • Congratulations Cyril and Alex. The last player to withdraw from a ranking tournament in the quarters or later, before O'Sullivan last week, was Higgins in 2000 (½ point to Alex) and the previous time was Dennis Taylor in 1984 (½ point to Cyril).

So here is the fully updated scoreboard after round 115:
