  • not a trick question

It took me quite a while to find the answer to this one but I got there in the end.

How can a player pot a colour with the first stroke of a visit followed by a red?

Not a trick question, it does happen in play.

    A free ball?

That would be a colour taken as a red, followed by another colour though.

My only thought was if he potted a colour by accident, then his opponent put him back in and he potted a red, but that is stretching things a little

There is no free ball and nothing necessarily potted by accident.
        Hope this helps.

pot red, snooker yourself. miss when trying to escape.
          end of turn.

opponent puts you back by chosing the miss option.
you nominate a colour, and fluke it. your break therefor starts with 2, 3, 4 or what ever colour potted.
and of course you're on red then.
