Is this true (if so, when and where) or just a guess (perhaps based on his having made 3 centuries, rather than total clearances)?

Yes it seems to be true.
If you go onto www.cuesnviews.co.uk and click on "where are
they now" then you should find it.

Unfortunately it does not appear to provide an detail here,
it justs states that he achieved the feat and that it was a world
            record at the time.

Thanks... interesting. I wonder if it is true and whether it was in a professional tournament or just practice / exhibition. Am pretty sure that Steve Davis did it in a major tournament but don't recall anyone else ever having done so.

I have now managed to track down what happened:
Taylor`s breaks were 130,140 and 139 and they were constructed
at Minehead, Somerset on 1st June 1978- the same occasion
as he compiled the record-breaking 3 centuries- quite an achievement!

                    Sorry about the delay...
The breaks were compiled at an Exhibition at Butlins Holiday Centre.
I found the information in the 1988 Edition of the Guiness book of records,
                    under the snooker section.

                      Hi Guys,
I think John Higgins made three consecutive centries in the welsh open early this year.
                      cheers,

I have that edition of the Guinness Book of Records, and must have read it long ago, but never thought to look there again! The exact quote is "David Taylor (b. 29 July 1943) made three consecutive frame clearances of 130, 140 and 139 at Minehead, Somerset, on 1 June 1978." As you say, it sounds like an exhibition , rather than a professional tournament.

Thank you. Where did you get this information from, please? I thought he had made 3 consecutive total clearances in a tournament around that time, rather than 3 in 4 frames. I'm not sure if my recollection is just a little hazy or whether perhaps this could be another occasion (which I think unlikely)?
