  • Snooker trivia quiz

Here is a just-for-fun trivia quiz. No prizes! I will post the answers on this thread in a few days.

    1. Currently, there are 8 players who have reached two ranking finals and been runner-up both times. Who are they?

    2. And who previously held the record, outright, for most ranking finals without a title?

    3. Which player, upon reaching his first ranking semi-final for 6 years, was provisionally top-16 briefly during the 2003-04 season, more than three years after leaving the official top-16?

    4. Which main-tour referee has a birthday of New Year's Day?

    5. Which players who are not currently in the top 16 have been provisionally in it at some stage during the 2007-08 season?

    6. Who beat two players with the same surname in consecutive matches at the Crucible (give me the year as well)?

    7. In qualifying for the 2004 Welsh Open, which player beat Gerard Greene having needed three snookers in the decider and then doubling the re-spotted black?

    8. Only once has there been only one player making his debut at the Crucible. Who's debut was it?

    9. Which player has had three official 147s made against him since the beginning of 2004, each of them being in a ranking event?

    10. In the 1999 Crucible semi-final between John Higgins and Mark Williams, what caused play to be delayed for about 20 minutes?

    11. Who was a member of the top-16 for fourteen seasons, and for twelve of them had an even-numbered ranking?

    12. The final of the Scottish Pairs Championship in 1984 featured which twosome, who both later had Crucible finals to their names — one as a player and one as a referee?

    13. Match these rules with the year in which they were introduced:

Rules: Minimum 4-point penalty for a foul; Touching ball; Free ball; Player can be asked to play again after a foul; Re-spotted black to decide tied frame; Foul to snooker behind a free ball

    Years: 1919, 1919, 1923, 1927, 1934, 1957.

14: What job might both Dean Reynolds and referee John Williams have ended up doing had they not taken up a career in snooker?

    15. What is the highest break that can be made three times in a single normal frame of snooker (i.e. excluding re-racks)?

    16. Who is the only player to appear at the Crucible whose surname contains a ‘Q’?

    17. Who made more Curcible centuries than anyone else in 2006?

    18. The distance from the Black spot to the nearest cushion was once described in the rules as being what fraction of the length of the playing area of the table — one tenth, one eleventh or one twelfth?

    19. Since 1990, which players reached their first ranking quarter-final and went on to win that title?

    20. Which player did Stephen Hendry beat at the Crucible four years in succession, apart from Jimmy White?

This was a really tricky one. The only one I know of the 160+ players to have played at the Crucible who had a q anywhere in his name was Quinten Hann, but that's not his surname.

                              Question 10

On Friday 30 April 1999 the semi-final between John Higgins and Mark Williams had a 25 minute interval after the tenth frame, when Higgins noticed fluid dripping from the overhead camera onto the table near the pink spot. After referee Alan Chamberlain had tried in vain to mop up the fluid, the cover had to be replaced and the table-fitter called in. The television technicians could not find the source of the problem, and it was eventually put down to an accumulation of condensation.
