  • Ssb - the liang and the short of it...

    Hmmm...

Liang Wenbo's match in the final qualifying round of the Shanghai Masters, which was due to be played in Prestatyn on Thursday, will now be held at the venue in China.

Liang has been unable to get his work permit.

I have sympathy for the Chinese players - Mei Xiwen and Li Hang also failed to get visas. It seems ridiculous really that Chinese professionals have to travel to the UK to try and qualify for a tournament in China.

It's all very well saying, 'tough, that's the system' but how many British players would fancy flying to China to try and qualify for the UK Championship?

However, the other side of this is that whoever comes through to eventually face Liang could reasonably claim they should receive a walkover. They may even have a legal case (although it's unlikely to come to that).

If a British player had, say, broken down on the way to Prestatyn would they have been able to go to Shanghai and play the match? Unlikely.

Of course, having Liang playing in Shanghai can be defended on commercial grounds. Having him there is good for box office and TV.

But as this is the case, why was his match scheduled for Prestatyn in the first place?

So on the one hand this decision is common sense, on the other it's an unlevelling of the playing field.

    As I said earlier, hmmm...

Presumably then either Mcmanus/Gilbert will have to interupt their prepartions and travel to China yes?

so my warning regarding is Wenbo in prestatyn was correct then.

as dave sais its a china Tournament so playing the shanghai masters in Rainy North Wales is stupid ....

What is the Answer to that......

obviously Hang and Xiwen will be in shanghai as Wild Cards but theire place on Tour is now in doubt big time with 5 Tournaments to go and they miss out on 1 with no fault of theire own.

I think that keeping his match for China is right and I think British players would not want to travel to China to qualify for the UK Championships as David mentioned. So Chinese players won't want to travel to the UK to qualify for the China Open.

Yes this is true but it is unfair on DG/AM to have to travel to China last minute is it???

I think it's right to hold it over, but they should have done it beforehand and not now just because of the visa issue. That's what has caused the problem.

The only sensible thing to do is to play it half-way betwen China and the UK. Dubai maybe?

What if Liang's opponent in the qualifying round now cannot make it to China to play Liang because of flight problem or whatever? Does he just forfeit?
If so, then why is Liang allowed to switch venue when he was unable to make it?
If not, then how are they going to play that match?
Liang's opponent now has to spend much more to play this round than he was originally promised. I am just wondering if he has a say in whether he agrees to play in China or not?
I do totally agree that asking Liang to play a qualifying round in the Uk for a tournament in China is totally ridiculous--but at least when he signed up he knew that was to be the plan and he agreed--while his opponent always expects to play that round in the UK.

I don't know if they can be there as wildcard being on the MT bur even if they are this will not give them any ranking points that could help them to stay on the tour. With only 6 events it may prove dooming for them.
I find this totally unfair towards the other chinese players. OK Liang is good value but he certainly will not be struggling to stay on the tour!

good point, ive had a disscussion about this before, in my opinion if world snooker choose to shift the match to china because of comercial reasons and the player effected dosent get a say then they should pay the difference in travel costs between traveling to wales and traveling to china.

i know people may say "well liang has to travel to the wales and his travel costs arent paid" but as you said the qualifiers are always played in wales and liang knew this at the start of the season.

I find it unfair towards all of these players that WSA haven't taken care of their visas or working permits or whatever. There must be something they could've done. No need to make it an issue between the chinese players, unfairness is somewhere else imo.
