  • Ssb - china in their hands

Ronnie O’Sullivan’s capture of the Shanghai Masters title underlined the fact that he can win tournaments when not playing at his best.

It also provided further evidence that China is a snooker powerhouse. Crowds at the Grand Stage were strong and enthusiastic while the tournament attracted as many as 50 journalists a day, providing acres of coverage in the Chinese media.

Liang Wenbo has gone above Ding Junhui in the provisional rankings and the country now has two world class players. There are many more practising several hours a day who could break through in the next few years.

This is a market that has been well exploited so far but can still be used to drive the game forward.

But what is needed are different formats and ideas for events away from the mainstream to generate additional excitement.

    Here are two:

Firstly, bring back the World Cup and play it in China. This event was a mainstay of the circuit for several years but was only once staged in a grand scale, in Bangkok in 1996.

Playing for one’s country would give the players a different focus and create extra interest in each of the nations represented.

Second, how about a Ryder Cup style competition pitting Asia versus Europe?

You could play singles and doubles matches and make it a regular annual event, alternating between China and European venues.

The WPBSA has enough on its plate with the world ranking circuit but this is an opportunity for independent promoters to cash in on the Chinese boom, which still needs to be nurtured if it is to last.

The Ryder Cup style evrnt sounds very good in theory but my concern would be that it would cause an instant divide/rivalry between the two nations at a time when some feel the game should be pulling together.
Always play snooker with a smile on your face...You never know when you'll pot your last ball.

I like the sound of it, probably as UK v The Rest. China, Thailand and later Germany would be ideal venues for the away meetings. Same format as Ryder Cup might work. Singles would be easy enough - 6 frame matches so you can earn a half. Once aplayer gets 4 the match is over. You'd need a venue with 4 tables so your 12 singles could be played roll-on-roll-off over an afternoon-into-evening session.

For the first two days of doubles play you could easily do both fourballs and foursomes: you'd have a ten frame match of normal doubles, then one where the two players from each side play alternate frames (but maybe allow each to play up to three in succession and five max otherwise you'd have A v B , C v D all the way through. Better would be A v B, A v D C v B, etc.

Just need to pick teams now: Ireland are not UK, so the Rest can have Doherty and Judge. Or should we kindly consider them British? They do speak English quite well.

12 players needed per team plus a non-playing managerial style captain.

I can categorically state that an England versus The Rest Of The World Event with Doubles and Singles matches, Team Captains, etc etc is being worked upon as we speak. Negotiations with a major Sponsor took place in Shanghai last week and went well.

That is all I can, and will, say for now ...

Ryder style game would be great, but it would be more fun to make it UK vs world.

If this means Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland are with the rest of the world, there won´t be that many places for overseas players, if the strongest team has to be set up.

The 12 UK players would be top 16, with 4 rest of world players from the top 16 provisional. Going down the rankings, you drop a fair bit to include the two Irishmen, then Jin Long at no.67, and then the likes of Noppadol Sangnil, Li Hang etc. So the rest of the world might be struggling in depth.

England v The Rest solves that. Then Maguire, Day, Ding and Robertson can be united in the attempt to put the old enemy/mother country in its place.
