No more robots please. These are the ones killing the game

    Totally agree!

If I was organising this event I would want Jimmy or the Nugget in there or preferably both...snooker needs them bigtime!

    • I've advocated for years changing the structure of the standard ranker outside of the WC to the top 8 seeds, 8 qualifiers, and 8 wildcards that play the qualifiers. A sport needs all its big names on TV, and at the moment in snooker those are Ronnie, Jimmy, Steve Davis and Hendry and to guarantee the Chinese interest, Ding. I'd fill up the remaining wildcards with exciting players (i.e. Neil Robertson, Wenbo) and national interests (Doherty & Allen in Ireland, Williams, Day and Stevens in Wales, Higgins in Scotland) etc. Fewer matches would help with the scheduling as well because I don't think the conveyor belt mentality of roll-on roll-off, and untelevised tables at venues does the sport any favours.

      • Maybe a sort of rule similar to the masters golf in that any former champion ..i.e world champion gets an automatic place in the event for life ,that would ensure a public interest ,however would be a shame for Jimmy to miss out so maybe he just gets a wildcard to every tournament just for the good of snooker,.
Maybe thats far fetched however I dont see why a former champion rule cannot be applicated to the masters....just imagine Steve Davis v Alex Higgins again or Jimmy V Stephen Hendry....the ratings would be massive again

        • We'd have to rig the rule and say two majors, and that way they get Jimmy in but see off Dott and McManus.

          • I'm looking forward to seeing Jimmy play, it could well be the last time on TV! Think back to Scotland the other week when there were 10 paying members of the audience for some games. If White had been playing it would've been packed irrespective of his standard. Snooker has got a choice of seeing Davis, White, Parrott, Drago etc being replaced by introverts who nobody has any interest in watching, however good (no names) or of finding ways to keep them in the public eye, possibly at the expense of 'lesser lights'. This really needs to be addressed as there isn't much time left I reckon.

            • Something needs to be done about the audiences too; it's just not cool to follow snooker these days like it was in the 80s. For example, if Robertson reached the final it would be worth paying Dannii Minogue £10k to go and support him. When we get a bit more money into the game we might be able to afford Kylie. I mean, when Kirk Stevens made a maximum in 1984 Donald Sutherland was in the audience! When was the last time a major Hollywood star came to watch the snooker??

              • Well, we had Ted Hankey last week!!!

The one thing 100% guaranteed to kill snooker is to let it's established stars sink slowly down the rankings and off the TV.

last time i looked Bobby Charlton wasent playing football. John Mcenroe for some reason wasent at Wimbledon and Viv Richards has retired from cricket but snooker wants to preserve old bones why not dig up Joe Davis.

come on get real snooker needs to look forward not get stuck in the twilight zone with past it relics.

                  • And your solution is what? Stage more tournaments? Increase the tour size? How is that going to help matters? If that's the way you want to do it then the only country that can accommodate that type of structure is China who will go and support their players whatever their ranking or style of play, but the last time this subject came up you said moving the WC to China would "kill the game"...

                        • I'm tired of listening to moanings about how great were Alex Higgins, Jimmy White, Kirk Stevens, Steve Davis etc. If someone is so keen on watching them on tv, then organise some veteran tournaments, and leave real snooker for in form players.
Liang is a poor player, but his form this season is by far the best from the remaining players outside of top 16, so he was the one who should get the wildcard.

Because it's not being promoted properly.

Wimbledon and the Open golf is always packed to the rafters. Nobody says "great characters" when players miss the sidelines or hit a smash directly into the spectators, or pop a little dolly into the net an make a laugh and joke with the crowd or the officials every 2 minutes.

Everybody stills says what great character Willie Thorne when he made a facial reaction after missing a ridiculously easy dolly blue into the centre. The golf and tennis crowd woulld not react like that other than at the end of year seniors exhibition. The golf and tennis crowd are far less forgiving than the snooker audience. The forgiving snooker audience who only attends on because of an old character appearing on a wildcard who in reality is a no hoper for the title needs to be replaced by a more serious one that is packed all the time and are assessing on how good they are like they do in tennis and golf.

I don't give a damn about Jimmy, or Wenbo, or Cope etc... I just express my oppinion which i'm sure is right, that an inform player should get the second wild card. The only person who should be satisfied by chosing White instead of Wenbo is Mark King who got such an easy opponent.
