  • Ssb - davis wins six reds world title

Mark Davis pocketed a Christmas bonus of €10,000 by winning the inaugural 888sport.com Six Reds World Championship in Killarney tonight.

Davis, the world no.47 from Sussex, defeated twice Crucible world champion Mark Williams 6-3 in the final.

And it means his six year-old son, Jack, and daughter Millie, aged two, can enjoy an extra special festive period.

“It’s good timing and the kids will be pleased because they know they’ve got a good present coming,” Davis said.

“I played well all through the tournament. I had some luck, which you need with this shorter format, but I made some good breaks in the final.

“With the standard of the players who came here it was always going to be a bit of a lottery as to who won. I’m just happy to be the last man standing.

“I enjoyed the whole week. It was a good tournament and very well run. Killarney is a lovely place and it’s fair to say I’m a big fan of six reds snooker.”

Davis, 37, had previously won two minor invitation events, the 2002 Masters qualifying event and 1996 Malta Masters.

To reach the final he beat fellow main tour professionals Gerard Greene, Jamie Cope, Mark Joyce, Joe Swail and Mark King.

He twice trailed Williams by a single frame but from 2-2 was the stronger player, knocking in breaks of 71 and 65 on the way to clinching victory.

Williams edged Sheffield amateur Adam Duffy 5-4 on the black in the quarter-finals before completing a comfortable 5-1 semi-final defeat of Barry Hawkins.

“I’ve had a good week,” the Welshman said. “It was more relaxed than the ranking tournaments and Mark played very well from 2-2. He deserved to win.

“I think all the players have enjoyed this tournament. It’s something different and I’m a fan of the six red format.”

Reigning 15 red world champion John Higgins saw his bid to complete a unique double ended by a 5-1 defeat to Mark King in the quarter-finals.

Ken Doherty, beaten by Duffy in the last 32 and one of the tournament organisers, said he was pleased with the first staging of the short form World Championship.

“The feedback I’ve had from the players has been very positive and we’ll definitely be back next year,” he said.

“There’s no doubt that six reds snooker has its place and we hope to be even bigger and better in 2010.”

For some reason I don't like this 6 reds game at all. It' s banalizing snooker.
I saw that going differently in my mind

I really enjoyed watching 6 red snooker this makes the game much faster and there are no room for mistakes which will make it possible for everyone to win who believed that Reanne Evans would beat John Higgins 5-4? that would not happen in regular snooker. I like the "a mistake and you're out" philosophy in 6 red snooker

              Congratulations Mark Davis

I like the 6 red format too, it's only folk set in their ways that dont like change that whinge about it.......

I had a few frames of 6 red when i went for a practice t'other day.

It's all good, whether it takes off or not will remain to be seen.

I hope it sticks around and gets a bit tidier "venue wise" and maybe get a few decent tourneys televised on the beeb....yeah right....

I guess you would like a 2 ball red game as well because you just like change ?

                      I don't like it either.

You can understand it though. A lot of vested interests are seeing their livelihoods ebb away because UK is bored stiff with the conventional game. (There's hardly a player under 40 in Newcastle league!!). Those same interests are desperately considering anything, ANYTHING, to attract the ADD generation to snooker.

I watched Williams v Hawkins and it was like being back in Scotland ie Morguesque

Whoever said "Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing" was an arsehole.

Indeed, I can't imagine 6 ball reds will change the popularity of snooker. But time will show. Players in Belgium clubs are also 40+ years old as well as you mention in your post

Well I loved the event, from start to finish.
Eurosport billed it as fast and furious, but it's actually not that fast nor furious.

There are some very quick frames, particularly if players mess up their break off and opponent dishes. but there were a lot of slow frames too which went tactical, which will happen a lot in 6 reds because of the closeness of the scores as frames gets to colours etc.

I think people need to watch an event or at least a full day of matches and not one or two in isolation before making their minds up.

But also it's wroth noting that for the fans, these events are a great day out. A chance to see a lot of players in action and to get to meet the top players, get autographs, photos etc, which isn't also possible at the traditional ranking events.

I've now attended more than half a dozen various six red events and have enjoyed all of them.

Once again congratulations to Mark Davis who was a worthy champion. Also to Michael White for his 2.28 6 red max 75, which i think is going to take a bit of beating.

i like it for what it is but it throws up to many freak results and having Mark Davis as World Champion is slightly absurd after 19 years a pro with a top ranking of 35.

young players couldn't embrace this tournament even.

what makes snooker the 15 red game good is you really have to play brilliantly to win in 6 reds its a toss of a coin.

Variety is the spice of life as they say.

The same 15 red 15 black with max 147 best of x frames as the one and only format all the time and same conditions all the time is terribly boring. Sure the traditional 15 red 15 black with max 147 on the table must remain the main course, but not the one and only course if snooker really is to move into the modern times like so many other sports.

How about an event where double points for potting colours as long as either cue ball or object ball cross the centre line of the table from 1 half of the table to the other as a variation of format. How about a tournament where there are matches 3 hours long where an interval comes in after 1.5 hours and a 147 can be made either side of the interval as another variation of format.

Conditions varying from event to event like faster cloth in 1 event, wider pockets the next, tighter pockets and slower cloth in another would make things more like golf and tennis where the surface/course type and conditions constantly change.

Why are so many snooker fans so totally against the idea of embracing the same sort of variations that the fans of many other sports have enjoyed for so long.
