Well yes, but it would be exactly the same if he lost to Carter. The only chance for him was to get past Carter, which seems unlikely if you consider that he was whitewashed by an amateur.

But had he beaten Liu, it could have worked in his favour, because he would be somewhat used to the conditions before playing Carter.
