to start with i dont deal with opinions on this i deal with facts of what happened in his life and career.

i do not start to justify his behaviour in later life but you got to realise his life took a very bumpy ride thats made him bitter thats not my opinion thats factually correct.

      jb134. wildJONESEYE. Word up.

      par·a·dox   /ˈpærəˌdɒks/
      –noun

      1. a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth.
      2. a self-contradictory and false proposition.
      3. any person, thing, or situation exhibiting an apparently contradictory nature.
      4. an opinion or statement contrary to commonly accepted opinion.

That word describes Alex AND why you lads are in disagreement.
He is the figure that people "love to hate" AND "hate to love", but do.
BOTH views are correct. Both are OK. NO disagreement necessary!

And Mignon makes a very very important humanistic point:

QUOTE=Mignon;501910]One of the best players in this sport's history is in his hour of need [/QUOTE]

[ Even if we were talking about that tw@t Donald Trump I would flip him a quarter ]

That's why I'm going to repost this "not funny" joke.
It does express the shockingly paradoxical nature of Alex Higgins IMHO.

Bad personal, insulting behaviour can't be condoned at any time for any reason, no matter the situation. You've done it in the last few minutes with people you don't even know.

Alex is only a year younger than me, and I have plenty of personal facts to rely on, and those of others. I know you are a fan of his, but you can't blindly chastise others for their experiences. What age group are you in Wild, 20s, 30s, 40s ?? Do you play the game at pro or national level?

I feel sorry for Alex, and i too wish that i could somehow click my fingers and make him better, but after all is said and done his lifestyle has contributed massivley to his illness and was probably the cause of it, although it can happen to anyone. I'd say 90% of people ive spoken to also say that he wasnt a very nice man to be around, often abusive and punching above his weight.

The fact that he still continues the same lifestyle (drinking, smoking and gamlbing) has got to be enough for some people to realise that hes just a lost cause now and its only a matter of time before he reaches the end of his life. One man just simply cant keep bombarding his body for this long, day in day out, something has to give eventually, surely. I don't wish him any harm, but how he has survived this long i will never know.

I still think he was the games most flamoyant and exciting player on his good days, and i really like watching videos of him still. Does he deserve another chance though? It's something for many people to ponder, thats for sure.
I love the game of snooker :) (even though my mates think that its just a load of balls :D )

have i condone it ? no i havent

ive said its 2 easy for some people to pass judgment on the way his life has ended up without fully appreciating how tough its been.

when he was 20 he didnt have the support todays youngsters had he was the biggest name in the sport and even today his name fills out arenas like nobody else...Alex was the prototype player and he made mistakes and it angers me a bit when people think the Alex of today was the Alex of the past it wasent.

Alex did a lot for charities during his hay day but never wanted it be known for publicity he did it because he wanted to do it not to be seen as good.

today if he had made it for publicity people might be a bit kinder on him but because he kept it quiet people think Alex was out for himself and nobody else whitch was never the case.

Alex Higgins is not my favourite person... in fact i very much dislike him as a person. As a snooker player the sport owes him a huge debt of gratitude.

There are at least 10 players i can think of with over a million pounds in winnings. they earn this much in no small part because of the impact he made on the sport.

              10 snooker millionaires.... £2000 each.

I've heard, but third hand with no confirmation, that the WPBSA covers his rent and some of his expenses to this very day, 28 years after he won his last world championship. I believe the money comes out of their benevolent fund, which Clive Everton feels needs a good audit review after the way they treated Chris Small I believe it was.

Certainly Alex was naturally gifted and certainly he was a major force in making the sport what it is today and was in the heyday of the 80's, but he didn't do it alone. I will agree though that he sure selected some crappy managers who took advantage of him, but he managed to lose most of his money himself through betting and booze at the very least, and he even mentions his enjoyment of grass in his book.

                Terry

Terry, I'm not sure were you got the info from but Alex lives in council accommodation. He is unemployed therefore his rent is paid for him by the Northern Ireland housing executive.

You have not dealt with the facts I provided, nor have you provided any "facts" of your own.

I am looking for documented examples of mangers using him etc etc.

                    Bumpy ride?

The guy was worshipped like a god.

                        Girls.
It's not about facts, or history or being right or wrong.
It's not about punishing him for being an assh@le or rewarding him for being a saviour.
                        It's about charity.

Getting real is pretty much my point mate. My beliefs are based on documented incidents that have actually occurred yours are based on am not sure what but certainly not anything real or tangible.

I agree whole-heartedly with Terry. While a lot of debt is owed to Alex Higgins for his involvement in the early heady days of snooker, a lot of the massive endorsements he received in the height of the game and the prize money, and the exhibition fees were wasted. OK so he was bled dry by a former manager (these things happen and people who have lost far more don't feel they are owed it by the hand that once fed them). people have tried, as quoted, and had their generosity thrown back in their faces by ridiculous refusals by Alex, or ridiculous requests for payment in addition for the signing of a piece of paper.

I have sympathy for his plight, as I am human, but you get nothing in this world without giving something back, and Alex stopped giving back a long long time ago, which is why I am against contributing to him today personally.

All these stories about him being forced to live off baby food and the like as well just get my back up. £30 gets you a decent blender. You can make meals and blend them and get sufficient calories rather than eating baby food.

Sorry for your plight Alex, but before you can expect help from others, you have to fully start helping yourself.
