  • Ssb - snooker returns to itv

Snooker will return to ITV for the first time in nine years with a new event to be announced today.

I will post details of Power Snooker after the official launch - happening right now and attended by Ronnie O’Sullivan and Barry Hearn.

ITV’s last involvement in snooker ended in 2001 with the third and final staging of the Champions Cup. They also screened the Nations Cup in this period.

Prior to this the ITV network broadcast four tournaments a season during the boom years of the 1980s: the International, World Doubles (later the World Matchplay), Mercantile Classic and British Open.

These latter two tournaments had best of 25 frame finals played over Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon.

The climaxes to these finals frequently drew high audiences, several of which were in excess of ten million.

Then two things happened which heralded the beginning of the end of snooker on ITV.

They used to share coverage with Channel 4 but when Michael Grade arrived as chief executive of C4 in 1987 he declared he wanted ‘a channel for people who don’t like snooker.’

In attempting to make the channel unique, this was perfectly fair enough but it meant ITV had to try and find the hours to properly show their events, not easy in the days before digital with so many other programmes competing for space.

Then in 1988 ITV won the rights to show a live first division football match every Sunday afternoon, eating up the slot traditionally taken by snooker.

ITV gradually scaled down to three tournaments, then two and then finally none at all.

The broadcasting landscape has changed, though. ITV now has four channels with ITV4 showing several hours of sport, particularly PDC darts – also headed by Hearn, football, boxing, tennis, motor sport and, currently, the Tour de France.

ITV4 will show eight hours live coverage of the new event, which will be held over a single day.

As I say, I will post details after it has been officially launched. I suspect it will attract a fair amount of comment as it involves changes to the standard rules.

The good news, though, is that ITV are back on board which must be a good sign going forward, particularly as Sky Sports are dipping their toes into the water with World Snooker once again after seven years with their new Shootout.

thats fantastic and wonderful news. but i still think that hearn is still missing one very vey crucial thing to make all his plans pay dividend.....

    MARKETING!!

    - endorsements (hard, but can be done with the likes of selby ronnie, ding, fu and liang carter and hendry and robertson)
    - get the players ronnie or carter to get on an interview on topgear...hard talk with hearn
    - commmerials on upcoming tournaments/the PL during golden hours (hard without the money)
    - ads on the net (cheap to design and cheap to maintain)
    - an offical youtube channel/fb group like Old Spice or nike or NBA to conslidate information and videos (too many good videos and good people have been banned and taken off youtube) (cheap to operate and cheap to maintain)
    - revamp the world snooker website (layout and interface are too boring. it looks like a personal website made by high school geek), even gravity cue's site looks better and gives the better impression
    - facebook or apple apps (another cheap and effective way)

the electronic age is there to help make the sport bigger cheaply, and i see none of that happening.

Power Snooker is an independent event, although endorsed by WS

WSA does have an i-phone app. They launched it at the Crucible this year

Their website is being totally redeveloped and the new snooker stats stuff will also come online soon.

WSA also has a Facebook page which is promptly updated.

Videos are an entirely different matter. The broadcast clips are BBC copyright (or other broadcaster), that's why a lot of stuff has been taken down off YouTube.

Great news. Although disappointed it is just a one day event.

Will be interesting to see how it differs from the Sky Shootout event.

          forgive my ignorance.

at least let me add a follow up that here in the east... not a lot of people know about this...
this was what i meant by lacking coverage.

          my sincere apologies

with regards to rights issues, surely WSA has some from its own archieve.
i find NBA's youtube channel to a brilliant case study of sports electronic marketing marketing. as a snooker addict, i'd envision something like that for snooker too.

            Great news!

Does anyone have an idea when the event will be played (ie, the month)?

Great news that ITV are getting back into snooker, not so great that it's another change of format for the game. Sky's stop-watch, 6 red's comps, whatever this ITV format is going to be - they are all ok, but are messing around with the basic format of the game. You don't see pro-golf resorting to par 3 nine hole comp's. Formula one, when it was struggling, didn't introduce go kart tracks, or 10 lap races. There aren't Dart comps playing 301 or round the clock. Don't get me wrong, I love the atmosphere of exciting new ideas, creating new opportunities etc, but let the game live as it is - the toughest cue sport around. One to aspire to, one that all other cue-sports compare unfavourably to. Market it properly abroad, as it is. Break the USA. Transform Asia from Pool. Just don't create 17 different versions of the game so that new-comers, whether players or viewers, don't know which is the 'real' one.
I often use large words I don't really understand in an attempt to appear more photosynthesis.

Interesting to see World Snooker endorsing a new tournament which clashes with one of its own events already scheduled for Oct. 30 (i.e. fourth Euro Players Tour Championship event in Offenbach, Germany).
