  • Ssb - ronnie's new idea

Newspaper headlines suggested today that Ronnie O’Sullivan was planning a breakaway tour but these were misleading. He isn’t.

What O’Sullivan wants is a series of tournaments featuring hand-picked players he thinks the public would like to see.

He wants these to run alongside existing World Snooker tournaments, although with the tournament calendar now so packed it would be hard to see how clashes could be avoided.

Not all the quotes made it into the original stories but I have been given access to them.

    This is what O’Sullivan said:

“Other players like John Higgins and Mark Williams may feel the same as me soon. Get them with maybe Stephen Hendry, Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson and Judd Trump and you have a show.

“These are the players people want to see, the rest like Ali Carter are making up the numbers.

“I don’t see myself as in competition with World Snooker, they have big tournaments, but if I’m not in main events I need to do other stuff.

“Stephen Hendry retired for similar reasons, a year down the line who knows who might be up for it.

“People switch on the TV to watch certain players, like with John McEnroe in tennis. They know the characters, know the person, are excited by what they do and waiting for something to happen.

“I am not the only one who feels this way, I am the only one who has had the balls to say it. I believe there is another way, and I can open a door for other players.

“They could be fantastic, proper tournaments. Only eight players would have the status that bring something to that, that the public would pay to see, that I would pay to see.

“I think seven or eight now on tour would be interested in that concept.”

O’Sullivan is right that there are a handful of star names that draw the crowds. This is true of any sport.

But the danger is that a slew of tournaments featuring a small number of players would soon become a bore.

Without a ranking system or joined-up structure underpinning them they would just look like a series of exhibitions, although this is not to say they wouldn't attract the paying public.

An exhibition featuring Ronnie against, say, Jimmy White is a good night out and the Snooker Legends organisers have made a success of their events, of which these two crowd-pleasers are a part.

I can fully understand why O'Sullivan's idea would appeal to players: well paid events for little real pressure.

But would the public really take to them?

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn was distinctly unimpressed. He said: “Ronnie is looking for something to do and tour players are not allowed to play in unsanctioned events. We won’t sanction anything counter-productive to us.

“Tour players playing in events set up by Ronnie is a non-starter. I expect him to support the game that made him a world champion, not undermine it.

“He’s a great player and we want him on tour, but there would be zero tolerance for him or others joining him on this kind of thing. I am talking heavy sanctions.”

On the face of it this isn’t very constructive. Why not work together?

But neither of these big characters seems willing to back down now. In fact, the O’Sullivan v Hearn turf war is developing into a rather tedious clash of egos.

If O’Sullivan feels the players’ contract is too restrictive then he has every right not to sign it. However, World Snooker sources are adamant he asked for appearance money, which they flatly refused to pay.

O’Sullivan can beat anyone on the snooker table but he won’t beat Hearn off it. He has various people in his ear telling him he’s worth more than everyone else but all they have done is left him without playing opportunities and, therefore, financially poorer.

Ironically, he seemed to be at his happiest early in his career when he was managed by, yes, Barry Hearn.

This latest plan will probably fall flat too. World Snooker won’t sanction tournaments that clash with their own and the other players won’t risk disciplinary action by competing in rival events.

I was there in the thick of the TSN breakaway tour and all that it ultimately did was damaged snooker and seriously depleted not only its reputation but also its cash reserves.

However, if O’Sullivan can bring new events to the table then World Snooker should not withhold a sanction just because he doesn’t want to enter all of their tournaments.

One thing worth mentioning in closing: there already is an event which features the game’s biggest names playing a series of matches for big money.

It’s called the Premier League and O’Sullivan has opted not to play in it despite winning it ten times, including all but one time under the shot clock rules.

Had he won it this year it would have been worth around £80,000 to him. It’s an event he genuinely enjoys and I think it’s one he’ll miss when it starts in August.

Perhaps the real test of this long running saga is the extent to which it misses him.

No thank you Ronnie, I'll stick with the likes of Mark Davis and Marcus Campbell who have reached a ranking semi-final on merit and played better than anyone else in the world this week.

I have no interest in watching a set of exhibition matches featuring players O'Sullivan finds exciting. I wouldn't even watch players I personally find exciting if they played like there was nothing at stake. And why specifically mention Carter anyway? Is there supposed to be some huge difference in the way Ding and Carter play snooker? If there is, I don't see it...

It would just be a version of the premier league but without any type of ranking or pressure. I don't think it will fly and Ronnie will have to realize if he wants to play in premier events he'll just have to sign the contract.

In a sense Ronnie might be right, if this allows us to increase the profile of Neil, Ding, Trump, Selby etc to the levels that Higgins, Hendry and Ronnie have then that would help take the game beyond the dependence it has on the older stars. A bit like the old POT black series perhaps. But I love what world snooker is doing now to give more opportunities to the lower ranked players.

I think that Ronnie needs to invest some of his money into world snooker stocks, It might be hard to get Hearns to sell that precious 1 pct Dough, I think that is what he will need to win this battle, not a world snooker championship, Its going to be hard to swallow but its is way or the Highway.
I try hard, play hard and dont always succeed, at first.!!!!:snooker:

The simple answer is a second Premier League, played on another night of the week with another 8 or ten players. O'Sullivan makes a few good points. There are a group of certain players the public want to see. So another league will give them that chance.

There is no-one who admires O'S more than me, that said, I believe the present structure is fine, we do get to see all the top ranked players. I also think O'S should get an attendance fee as do the top professionals in other sports, after all, he is without doubt the greatest player the world has ever seen. If any player doesn't want to play all ranking tournaments then he should have the right not to play, of course, they could find themselves having to qualify. O'S not playing in the Premier League seems unbelievable having won 10 of the 11 events. At present we get to see 32 of the top ranked players and I believe the public want to see them.

I think it could work as a one off event each year and would need sponsorship and TV coverage to be successful. It would be hard work to get it up and running but if Ronnie wants to give it a go I don't see why Barry should prevent players from entering it. Players should have that freedom. what Barry is effectively saying is my way or the high way.

                    its not a bad idea.
i cant see why there is a problem in structuring a few off-tour money matches/leagues/tournaments in the uk or overseas, provided that there isnt a clash for the participants and that these are formally organized with good presentation.

So basically, a Masters event 12-18 times a year. It would lack variety after a while. I think a breakaway tour would need 32-64 players and they'd have to be the cream. But it is doable. Anyone who thinks it's not should remember the experience of the BDO. It would need a promoter of course, who is credible. That's what ROS etc need to find, someone to take on Hearn. But under ROS's plans I'm sure there'd be less travelling, so snooker would revert to UK snooker again, which would be quite boring, and the growth of the game on a world scale would suffer, unless at least half of a rebel tours tournaments were outside Europe.

I think the best thing to stop snooker being turned into a treadmill is for the players union (is there one?) to simply tell Hearn to bog off. If they, as a unison, refuse to sign the next contract, Hearn has no players, and they can set up their own tour or insist that the WPBSA give Hearn his marching orders.
Harder than you think is a beautiful thing.

Again Ronnie with his brilliant ''guerilla revolution'' / ''me against the world'' idea!? When it comes to playing snooker, ronnie is preety much like a god to me... but when it comes to his off the table ideas and plans and whatever, you then realize that he's just like a little spoiled boy that thinks he's better than everyone and just wants that other kids play with him but by his own rules! That really seems pathetic to be honest and for the end...he won't organize any competitions or anything, he'll play in 4-5 tournaments this season and everything will be ok after a while.

Ronnie Feels there's too much snooker so what does he do i know come up with an idea for even more snooker to play.

if he wants a break from tournament snooker here is a idea don't enter just don't see the sense in all of this **** hes coming out with.

just sit back rest your feet (and mouth) and enjoy the time out.

I think what Ronnie is hinting at, is that due to the extra work load we are entering into a new era where some of the more experienced players who have earned a few bob might just decide that they no longer want to travel around the globe, therefore are forced into early retirement but still have a lot of good snooker in them. Stephen henry is a classic example of such a player, John Higgins is also approaching that age where family is more important then playing abroad and has a few bob in the bank. Ronnie's idea of hand picking players won't get of the ground but unless Barry wakes up and smells the coffee he is going to kill snooker in this country.
Death of a thousand snookers. lo
