  • Ssb - world snooker and the swsa: What went wrong?

“Some serious jobsworths at Gloucester academy, back to Sheffield please,” tweeted Judd Trump at the recent PTC.

Well, Trump and others have their wish. Paul Mount, owner of the South West Snooker Academy, has made it known he will not be staging any more World Snooker events after PTC4 later this year, a decision which will disappoint many in the game, especially spectators.

His statement can be read in full here. It follows complaints by the Snooker Players Association discussed here.

This did not go down well with Mount and his team but the main point of conflict is with World Snooker.

The SWSA statement did not state specific reasons for the decision but the relationship between the two parties seems to have soured over several issues.

One is over the unlikely topic of cloths. Last season, the contract between World Snooker and the SWSA provided for the governing body to re-cloth all tables at the academy for both matches and practice. This season, practice tables were not included in the re-clothing.

Mount raises much money for breast cancer charities but professional snooker itself is not a charity so players were charged £4 an hour (one of the SPA’s criticisms) for practice facilities.

Mount understood he could retain cloths for later re-covering but these were in fact removed from the academy.

It certainly did not help the SWSA/World Snooker relationship that Mount was ordered to pull his live streaming of the Pink Ribbon charity pro-am in June due to a concern over breach of the governing body’s own streaming contract.

I understand Mount was also unhappy with the result of a recent WPBSA disciplinary hearing against Stephen Lee, a former client of his against whom Mount took out county court judgements to recover money he was owed, and at the way the result was presented.

Lee will apparently pay back the £23,000 he owes Mount by a 5% deduction from each prize money cheque, which will be a slow process.

Mount felt that Lee’s relatively lenient treatment by the disciplinary committee was in contrast to that of another of his clients, Mark Allen.

Relationships such as this often founder on what appear to be relatively minor issues but the main problem seems to have been a breakdown of goodwill and, indeed, trust.

The truth is, the snooker world has a proud tradition of kicking gift horses in the teeth, which seems to continue in this bright new era.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this case, it cannot be good that the owner of the largest snooker facility in the country has fallen out so badly with the governing body.

For their part, World Snooker is a business and has to operate on solid business grounds, but they will lose out on £40,000 next season as a result of this.

They would doubtless contend some of Mount’s criticisms but I have so far had no response to my request for official comment, made 24 hours ago.

What it all adds up to is that, for the PTCs, it could well be back to Sheffield, where there is hardly any room for spectators and where a generally sterile atmosphere looms heavy in the air.

This will feel to many within the sport to be a backwards step.

Very informative and well presented post .

Sad state of affairs that they can't sit down and work out their differences .

I read that Lee had CCJ'S brought against him for £70k i thought . 5% of the prize money that will take a long time . Wins a Tournament for say £50k and pays him £2.5k .

Still looking forward at some point to visit SWSA .

What was Trump's complaint .......any idea ?
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

Disappointed with this as they have always seemed to give it their all and it seems like a nice venue. Shame.

I thought it was illegal to have feet on the table? 7 point foul ?

It was me - I am the jobsworth!!!!
I had to ask Judd and also several other players to leave our private swsa offices as our offices were not part of the World Snooker event and SWSA staff were needing to work there.
The players have their own players lounge and facilities upstairs.
My colleagues also requested referees and players to leave our offices on several occasions, which had been partitioned off, with clear notices, from the World snooker tournament area.

Im a bit bemused by all this.On the subject of cloths surely the terms of the contract SWSA sighed would specify what tables were reclothed and who keeps the cloths in question. There should of been no surprises there. On the subject of Stephen Lee,again not sure we can blame world snooker for a falling out between player and manager,i would argue Mr Mount has had a result getting 5%.I would still hazard a guess that these things are all very small matters and the real problem might be SWSA has paid 40 grand less amateur entry fees for something that doesnt make any money and just gives Mr Mount a load of grief from players and representatives. His staff have probably been treat like dirt and he thinks i can do without spending his hard earned cash on alot of primadonnas.

I had a similar problem, about to sink my teeth into a peter pie, when it was taken off me then scoffed in front of my very eyes.
He then demanded my car keys, so that he could go down to the local red light district, then pick up a couple of curries to bring back to the venue for his chums. Well what could i say? they are superstars after all!

And I know Janie was fair-minded, as she turfed me out of the office too when I was there and I ain't no super-star that's for sure.

The players can really be a selfish bunch of muppets. 'Oh, I can barely make any money out of PTCs', don't enter then. Don't worry about the sport boys. Cor blimey, imagine havin' to buy a cup a tea when you've got £30k car insurance to pay; hard done by!

Nice one Judd, your F&F won't just be driving half an hour to see you now. And thanks from all of us in the South West, we really fancy going up to Sheff to rubbish facilities to see you. So it's back to the sweat boxes ooop north with no spectators for the players. Well done boys, enjoy your free coffee.

Not sure what on earth they are moaning about, office staff sit in offices, non-office folk don't. The clue is the word 'office' which is probably on a sign above the door. Can't snooker players read or summat. Please don't answer this.

What a shame. Snooker needs people like Paul Mount and the SWSA. Its really in no-one's best interests to go back to Sheffield with no room for fans and no atmosphere. It seemed like most players were beginning to accept the PTC's, knuckling down and getting on with it. No doubt there will be the usual outcry when it all goes back to Sheffield.

Good luck Paul, Janie and everyone else involved with the SWSA for the future.
