I know the king of snooker sims (at least for the PC) is generally considered to be Shooterspool, but I’ve been playing a lot of Cherry Pop’s Snooker Nation on my PS5, and have enjoyed it a lot more than I have in the past.
The incredibly frustrating thing about the game, however, is that it had the potential to be brilliant, and really fill that void created by the absence of a proper snooker simulator for the console.
And what’s more frustrating is that it just needed a very minor tweak to the post-shot gameplay mechanics. As it stands you have two camera options after taking the shot. One is that it switches to a TV style overhead view, and the other is ‘auto zoom’ where the camera pulls out and follows the cueball. If there was a ‘do nothing’ option however, the sense that you’re at the table playing the shot would have been heightened massively. You play the shot, press R1 to ‘stand up’ and then use the right thumb stick to look around the table.
I’d pay good money for a VP4 / Shooterpool port to the PS5, but I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
