In comparison piracy likely hasn't grown in recent years, it's the same as always, the key factor here however is that it's harder to pirate console games (but not impossible, or rather there will always be enterprising people who make it possible, often just to see if they can).
In addition to that console games are for the most part more fairly priced than PC games, historically. So, it's a cost-effort/benefit equation from the pirates point of view, how hard is it to pirate this (i.e. do they need to pay to have their console chipped, etc), and what do they loose (i.e. cannot play online), therefore is it worth the effort to save £x .. if not, then they buy the game.
In addition to all of this, most pirates, if they could not pirate, would buy far fewer games than they actually pirate, again due to game pricing, so the amount of lost revenue is far less than the amount of piracy going on. Add to this the fact that pirates do buy games, and often more than your average consumer .. because they can try a game and get hooked on it, and share it with friends, who also get hooked on it, etc.. and there is an argument that piracy increases sales (over and above what would exist without the possibility of piracy)
Another side issue to think about, and compare to piracy, is the 2nd hand games market. If a publisher sells a game for £40, they get £40-£costs for it, if that game is sold 2nd hand they get nothing. So, each time it changes hands the amount they get per-head decreases i.e. 8 people owned that £40 game, it's now £5 per-head for the publisher.. yet 1 person bore the original £40 cost and the 2nd hand merchant made £100+ on the resales, none of which goes to the producer, and only a small amount goes back to the original purchaser. That's clearly not a fair system, and is likely a larger source of lost revenue for the publisher than piracy.. and the merchant gains revenue for effectively doing nothing.
In short, 2nd hand games are comparable to piracy, from the publishers perspective and all they help are the merchants. An ideal system would see all the money go to the publisher, and this is possible if the game involves a subscription or similar. Then the CD/DVD/box are not what is actually being purchased, so it cannot be re-sold 2nd hand, nor can it be pirated. Many publishers are moving toward this sort of system. And the ideal situation would be to produce a game which can be played without the subscription, but in a limited fashion to allow end users to trial it, and get hooked before purchase.
.. anyway, all I wanted to do was dispel the myth that everything is as simple as "piracy causes less PC games to be made"."Do unto others 20% better than you would expect them to do unto you, to correct for subjective error"

Some very good points there, but on this one...

The video game industry is doing quite nicely for itself as things stand, so I don't see the need for such a draconian system, but I do see the greed for it. Why should the publishers, producers, or whoever, get a slice every time a game is re-sold, any more than the manufacturer of any other product?
Video games are bloody expensive first time round, and as the figures show, the industry makes a killing. After that, it's the retailer who has to purchase, stock, market, quality control, and distribute the product, so he's quite entitled to his money as far as I can see.
Profit for the retailer on the initial sale of a new game is very small, typically £3-5 per unit.
Somewhere in the region of 10% of their outlay, add all the other costs of running an outlet, and it soon becomes clear that if it wasn't for the second hand value, there'd be no money in it for the retailers, and outlets would close, which would be very bad for the industry.
Also, if they do all go down this route, then you'll see piracy increase dramatically, IMO the second hand market alleviates piracy on a massive scale.

I have to say, considering the game is due out next week I'm a bit concerned there's been absolutely no previews on any gaming websites anywhere (at least that I can find). That is usually a worrying sign.
I'd love a really good snooker/pool sim on the PS3. So far WSC Real 09 and Hustle Kings have both been a bit disappointing in terms of the controls. Surely it can't be hard to properly map the stroke of a cue to an analogue stick in the same way Tiger Woods works for swinging a golf club?

As for no reviews demos etc. Yes very worrying, it will be poor as always and never be a Virtual Pool.
Come on VP4 get a move on.Last edited by RedThunder; 7 April 2011, 06:20 PM.
