  • Cue advice

    Hi, all

New to the forum, and looking for advice.

It was my bithday earlier this week and my girlfriend has very kindly offered to buy me a cue of my choosing! Bonus

I've always wanted a Parris cue purely, I'll freely admit, on the basis of the name. However, I've been reading through some threads on here, and some other cue makers have gotten me interested, i.e Wooldridge, White etc...

I'll be honest; my current cue is ridiculously cheap, but I'm regularly knocking in 20/30 plus breaks, so I think my game would benefit from a new cue of decent quality. It's the only cue I've ever played for any length of time with, but I have no idea of it's weight or size (presumably 58" and 17oz or so?). I'm 6'4" and it's sometimes too short when stretching to play a shot. The guys at John Parris reckoned I should be using a cue at either 59/60", but Mike Wooldridge's site seems to advise against having a longer cue?

Whatever I get, in order to ensure that my new cue is right for me, I need to be able to try a number of different cues with varying lengths, weights etc.., to see how they affect my action.

John Parris have invited me along to their shop to try a few cues out, but now I'm wondering if I should take the time to do the same with the other cue makers. I'd rather take my time and find the right cue for me, i.e. not buy blind off the web.

Do they all have tables set up and cues of differing specifications to try a few shots with? Are there any other cue makers I should get along to, or am I safe to stick with the three I've mentioned in this post?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,

Some people say the cue should just come under your shoulder? I'm 5' 11" and play with a 57" cue. The best advice I'd give is to go try out a few different cues, lengths, weights etc. Mike Wooldridge cues are excellent quality definitely worth a look. A mate has a John Parris Ambassador cue which is OK but my MW Shark Series is better even my mate who owns the JP cue says so. Another friend has a JP Ultimate which is excellent quality but ended up costing him £890!!! And there's a guy at my club with a Trevor White which is a beautiful cue top quality bought of eBay. A high priced cue doesn't mean you'll start knocking centuries in but there's nothing like a quality cue I'm waiting a MW Pro cue for my next one.

It also depends on your girlfriend and how much her budget is for you???

First thing to do is measure your current cue! Where do you hold it normally? If you only feel it's a bit short for "stretching" shots then perhaps you only need a mini-butt. If you want to try out some cues, you could do worse than trying Hunt & Osborne, if you're london-based. They're not far from Parris as the crow flies. Will Hunt normally has a decent selection of cues in different lengths, weights and prices that you can have a gander at. He'll also give you very good advice. In my opinion, his off-the-rack cues are better than Parris's; they certainly were the last time I visited both shops.

I'll second all of the above. I'm also 6'4" and i use a 58" John Parris but have a 58.5" T. White on order.

Many thanks for all the replies; much appreciated! I'll pop down to JP and Hunt & Osborne this coming weekend and see what feels right in terms of weight and size. I'll also measure my current cue ;o)

It's a bit short sometimes when stratching for shots, but other than that it's generally fine.

I'm also going to look at Trevor White, but I can't seem to find any contact details on the web. Does he have a website at all?

Ah, just read that Trevs1 is Trevor White on here. I can't see where I can PM him though?

Did you get along to Hunt & Osborne's to try out different lengths of cues? Because ADR147 is right, it's your arm length which will dictate the length of your cue to a great extent. Ask Will Hunt if you haven't already done so; I wouldn't go so far as to say he knows better than John Parris, but he'll most likely know better than "the guys at Parris's" and his advice is worth it's weight in gold.
Once you know the specs of the new cue you're going to get, it's much easier, and, who knows, perhaps you'll stumble across the very thing at Will's place.
If you are going to get a new custom-made cue, then Wooldridge, Parris, Hunt & Osborne and Trevor White'll all make you a top-class cue at varying prices; you might also consider Dave Coutts, Robin Cook, Tony Glover and Tony Wilshaw. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with any of these guys. But some are more value for money than others; send specs, ask for a quote, make your choice. Simple!

                      Good luck.

Kevin Muncaster of North West cues is good option as well. I own a great cue of his.

Thank you to all for the advice given so far; all really helpful. I'm heading off to John Parris and Hunt and Osbourne this Saturday to check out some cues.
