  • Grain filler stained cue?

    Hi all,

Was just hoping for some guidance on filling the grain on my cue. I’m tidying up a club cue at the moment, and I bought some thixatropic grain filler to fill the grain.

I applied it via the following process:

Started by cleaning the cue with a little white spirit.

Taped off the ferrule and sanded the cue using 400 grit sandpaper, followed by 800 then 1200 grit.

Next applied the grain filler using a clean cloth. Left it for half an hour or so before sanding again with 1200 grit and repeated this process 3 times to try fill the grain as much as possible.

Once that was done, I rubbed down one more time using 1200 grit paper.

Since doing this I’ve noticed the clean is a stained a little from the grain filler and now basically looks dirty. I was wondering what I might have done wrong to cause this? Used to much? Not sanded enough?

    Grateful for any help!

    Thanks all

Try some cue or linseed oil. I have used oil after applying the Legends grain filler and it removed the excess after I had wiped down with a cloth.

Highlighted your problem, much too fine a sandpaper, 300 grit is fine, finer than that and the paper is of a wet and dry type, usually black or grey in colour and that colour can transfer to wood so suitable only for metal really. You only need to use the grain filler once, take it off as soon as it's dry, about ten minutes not half an hour, sand the cue again with 300 grit, clean cue with a cloth dampened in white spirit to remove any dust and then leave to dry for about 24 hours before applying an oil finish.
