  • 10mm ferrule drawbacks?

Yesterday I visited Green baize for the first time looking for a new cue. For anyone thinking of going, you really should. I tried so many great cues on nice tables and stu was very helpful.

Over many hours I was using different cues and got it down to a handful of cues I like the feel of when striking the ball.

But as I was getting closer to store closing time I wasn’t striking and testing with screw and side stupidly as I was in a bit of a rush. But I wasn’t actually aware that ferrule size affects cue call reaction with spin either so didn’t think it would be a problem.

I settled on a gbl cue with a 10mm ferrule which struck the cue ball very well.

Since home I have read on the gbl website that 10mm ferrules are not ideal as it’s not the best for generating a screw and side on the cue ball.

Have you guys found this to be the case also? Interested in opinions if you have the time please.

My preference is for something a little bit smaller but can’t see 10mm being a problem. Good tip and technique will get you bye. In the pro ranks there’s a variety of ferrule sizes.

      Thank you for the reply.

I will get to the club a little later and put it to the test. Fingers crossed.

There's not a huge difference between 10mm and 9.5mm which is what lots of people use. Someone at my club uses a 11mm tip and still gets plenty of action. Plenty of people also use snooker spec cues for pool and don't seem to have any issues, whilst other swear by much smaller tips.

10mm is on the large side and unless you are playing on fast responsive cloths, it's not easy to create a lot of spin on the cueball.

There was an interview with Murphy after his first match and he had two cues, his main cue which was below 9mm which he'd had some work done to reduce the length to increase the tip size to 9.2mm and his new cue which was 9.5mm. He stated that it feels like an elephants leg the thicker diametre tip and it throws more, but his aim is to have various cues for different conditions. You'd be surprised how many pros are playing with smaller tip these days. Many 9mm or under. Seems it's less effort to move the cueball around which is even .lmore important on slower less responsive club tables.

Played with the cue earlier and I really like it.

I was getting screw and side on the ball, maybe not as much as before but I wouldn’t say it’s noticeable really for a player of my level.

Will take a little getting used to the change but feel very positive towards the cue.

              Slightly off topic.
But do greenbaize carry any carbon fibre snooker cues?

Just watching Anthony McGill who's using one and wondering what brand it is?

              Help anyone!

Don’t quote me 100% on this as I might be wrong, but I didn’t notice any whilst I was in the store yesterday.

Best thing about 10mm cues .... 10mm tips fit with no trimming!!! Also great for control on plain ball potting, less unwanted side. If you watch the "Break from Life" lad he's using a minimum of 10mm tip and does pretty well.

Agree 10mm is fine for snooker. I had an an old burwat brought back to life, which was damaged at tip end. Had to reduced to accommodate a 10.2mm tip. And can screw full length of table.
there's a YouTube clip of Barton snooker coaching where he's using a £10 cue with a massive tip. And can still screw back and out side on. Its all in the technique.
Btw you won't go far wrong with a cue from stu at green baize. Cues are all about personal preference, if it feels right when you get it. It is. Only practice is lacking with it now.

I play with a 10mm tip, easier to shape the tip with a flat top (centre ball) and domed sides,(screw, side and top), finding the centre of the cue ball much easier than with a 9mm one. I won my 8 ball leagues division one singles title using an old 11mm tipped biliiard cue, if you can't screw back those little balls with a tip bigger than 8mm then your technique is very lacking.
