  • New Cue Advice (and re-tipping)

    Hi all,

I am starting to get back into billiards again after a long time, and am using an old BCE Ronnie O'Sullivan Custom cue that's probably about 20 years old. Now, I am not blaming my crap play on the cue, however, it just doesn't feel right, and besides, I want a new toy. However, I am a bit stuck on where to buy a cue. I am in London, so there aren't really any shops where I can try a load of different ones out, so it's a bit of a blind buy for me, though I am trying some of the cues in the snooker club to get a feel for what might be more comfortable.

I think the trouble with the cue I have is that it is too long (57'' - I am just about 5'8), and it feels a bit bottom heavy, like all it's weight is at the base of the cue. It's 16'9oz, which seems heavy enough to me, though the lighter cues feel a bit more comfortable. So so far, all I've worked out is that maybe a 55-56'' cue that weighs a little over 16oz might be the way to go.

Billiards is a lot about top spin, follow through and side, so I am not sure what else I should look for to aid that. There seem to be a few decent places to order one, and I am looking at Cue Craft, Cue Sports or Mark Richards and happy to spend £100-£150.

The other failing of my current cue, aside from age and cheapness, is the tip is also about 2- years old, and I figure it's a good cue to experiment with, however the tip I'd like to try doesn't come in 9.5mm, only 10mm, so I'd need to trim it down. Are any of those tools on amazon any good for that, or is there something that will make sizing it simple, or is it just best to man up and go at it with a razor blade and sand paper?

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi andriko,
if you want to replace a tip by yourself the most important thing is a sharp knife or scalpel.
I use a scalpel and change the blade after two tips. I do the tips in my club.
you find a lot of videos on YouTube.
snookercrazy has made a good video to name one.

Hamilton Billiards are in Hertfordshire and we get a lot of people in from London, Cambridge, Sussex as we are quite well placed without having to venture up north (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

We stock Peradon and Cannon cues with cues starting from £60 all the way up to £800 and we have a 7ft Pool table and full-size snooker table you can try them out on. Plus we also do retipping. You're more than welcome to try as many cues out as you like.

Thanks! I'll have to swing by one day, I pass Baldock when visiting the in-laws - how long do your re-tipping services take?

Usually 15 mins if you can’t leave it with us. We’re just off a side road past the services on the roundabout. You’ll have to let me know it was my post on here that brings you to us. Just good to know where people see our name
