  • help from learned members to settle an argument

Hi Guys, been out playing league pool this evening and had a discussion with another member of my team as to whether my cue is varnished or not!!.
I play with a one piece tony ions cue and i maintain that the cue is not varnished in any way just oiled ( by myself ) with linseed oil, i also sold my barracuda old masters cue to another member of the team and i also maintain that has no varnish on either.

can anyone settle the argument for me???

Normally a Tony Ions cue is grain-filled and then oiled, so no varnish there! If the Barracuda is an old one, then it's a Kev Muncaster and Kev doesn't varnish his cues either, however, without seeing and touching the cues, it's impossible to be 100% certain. Do the cues get sticky/tacky quickly when you play with them? If they do, then that's often a sign that they're varnished.

If it's oiled it will normally make a rough sound when you run your finger along it. If it's varnished it probably won't.

If you've been oiling it and the oil has taken it's unlikely to be varnished.

            Here's what you do mate...

Throw it in a fiery lake...

            1. if it burst's into flames it's a varnished cue.

            2. if it floats it's a witch.

My cue is varnished and makes that sound when I run my finger along it. Are my fingers not normal?

Have you actually tried drowning your cue then? Surely a snooker cue will float? Sounds like you've had some experience?

Not yet, but... I recently felt like calling a Roman Catholic priest to perform an exorcism on the cue I used in the last Club tournament.

Keith seemed pretty sure 3/4 cues sink... i would think they float... being wood... just wondering if he got bored one day (sounds like somthing i would do )
