  • Movement in the ferrule?

A friend bought an ebay special (unused but second hand) chinese cue.

He got it cheap as you would expect and is getting on well with it.

However it makes a very tinny noise upon striking which has turned out to be a loose ferrule, you can turn it ever so slightly.

Is this a diy fix? can the ferrule be removed and reglued? if so are they threaded? like i say its only a cheap cue and he doesn;t wanna send it for repair due to the cost.

Yes, should be easy enough to sort that yourself.

If you want to remove it, make sure you mark a line to ensure it's re-aligned with the shaft at the same spot, then if need be, gently warm it to remove. You can mix a little epoxy and slide it (or thread it) back on making sure to get it set to the same point which aligns the marks you made earlier.

Give it a little downward tap to ensure it's firmly against the shaft and allow to set.

You might have to re-finish it once the adhesive has gone off, but that shoudln't be too much hassle.

      Trevor,
How would you recommend to clean up the excess epoxy, and the re-finish you spoke of, please?
Would there be a big problem if super glue was used instead?

I wouldn't use super glue if the ferrule is a threaded one!

There shouldn't really be any 'excess' epoxy, as you'll only need a very small amount to start with, and that will be on the timber spiggot on the top of the shaft and inside the ferrule, ready for placing it on.

If you do manage to get any epoxy on the shaft, then it's easily cleaned off with methylated spirit, or, waitn until it's almost set, then rub off any that might be left on the shaft of the cue, because it's soft enough to remove then. It's easy to tell when it's at this point of setting, because you'll have some adhesive to test on the piece of card (or other material) you've used to mix it on.

Re-finishing is another matter, and can be done in various ways.

            Trevor,
Thanks a lot for your information.
Sometimes, I see a line between the ferrule and the shaft, form by I would assume to be the adhensive. Sometimes, there will even be a bit of mark of a darker color left on the wood just below the ferrule.
What would you recommend to get rid of that line so the fit would look more "tight", please?
Thank you once again for your help.

              Just an update:

attempted to fix this last night and it was quite an easy job.

Hardest thing was getting the ferrule off without damaging it, but managed it with patience.

The actual ferrule was threaded but there was no thread on the cue?? anyways good old araldite seems to have done the trick!

re tipped it with a MW single layer and will be doing the refinishing including a possible regraining later this week.

I too bought an ebay special and am having the same problem with the tinny sound when striking the ball. Could you explain exactly what I need to do to solve the problem? Cheers

make sure the joint is fully tightened and this is not what is causing the noise, these cues dont have the best joint and can take some effert to tighten them fully.

If your sure it is the ferrule follow trevs instructions above to remove and reglue. just be patient when applying heat (i used a household iron stood up and rotated the side of the ferrule) to soften the old glue and try not to damage the ferrule when removing.

use araldite to reattach after cleaning up the old glue residue both on the ferrule and cue.

i was actually going to do a how to but didn't take any pics.

ps dont hold me responsible if something goes wrong, my mate trusted me to do it. but i would have probably be buying him a new cue if i messed it up!!!
