Fiber or Brass Ferule ???

Fibre ferrule will crack and deform quite a bit easier than Brass. You can polish the fibre to a shine as well, but it is best done on a lathe. Also, the black fibre tends to wear off much faster and easier than brass. It is like a soft PVC material.
The fibre has a softer hit because it is quite a soft material.
If you change a fibre ferrule to a brass ferrule or vice versa on a cue, Kevin Deroo believes it may affect how it throws the cue ball when applying side (it is written as so on his web site), but it should not be a very big difference.
Some believe that fibre can apply more side to the cue ball than brass ferrule. I am not sure about that. I think it is subjective.
All pros you see on TV play with brass ferrule. A lot of old Canadian snooker players play with the black ferrule (Jimmy Bear, Cliff Thorburn...) probably because they are used to how it hits and the way it looks.
Some older UK antique had a brown fibre ferrule, but then basically everyone uses brass these days.
Tom Gauthier uses bronze rather than brass as his metal ferrule and he also offers black ferrule on lots of his cues.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 26 April 2009, 04:28 PM.
