  • Cue for my mate

Hey guys my mate has taken up snooker and it looking for a entry level cue the only problem it he is rather tall over 6ft 6". All the standard club cues are wayyyy to small for him and he just cant get one to suit. Only think I have suggested is getting a standard cue with 6" mini butt and just playing with it on all the time. At a guess he will be looking for something around 64"-65". Any suggestions, help is much appreciate.

PS. Dont suggest he plays with the 8ft super cues found in the club for those out of reach shots LOL

how much is he willing to spend and also how "into it" does he want to get? and is 65inch really necessary?

There was a thread on here recently from someone in a similar position, personally I would be hesitant to go over 60 inches for a cue. For instance I play with a 58.25" cue and am 6"2. I would possibly get 59 if I ordered a cue in the future, but as your 4" taller than me I sincerely doubt that he would require a cue 6" longer.
I wouldn't want to go past 60" myself, but all of the usual makes should be able to sort you out something at this length.

What is your definition of entry level? £50,£100,£150?

I would second RGC; cues start to play funny after 59"
I've had two mates with longer cues 62" and 60" and both snapped at end.
        So I wouldn't go to 64"

there was a guy in a league I played against a few years ago and he was about 6' 6" too. He did something that is cheap and easy to get a longer cue, he simply played with the 6" mini butt on the end of his cue all the time. Its plenty long enough for most tall players and naturally adds the required length without having to order custom made sizes.

Also its beneficial in that most cues over 60" are too whippy to play with so you are playing with a stiff enough cue but with the added length.

But wouldn't the balance point be all weird if you use the mini-butt all the time ??

I guess it would be different to the normal range but then again its something that you can adjust to. Its just a suggestion really. Its swings and roundabouts though IMO, you either have a cue with a whippy shaft or you get a stiffer shaft with the balance point further back. Either way its going to be a case of adjusting to one or the other.

I tried that, the cue I had before my custom arrived was 56" (way too short), I tried playing with the mini on all the time but I couldn't get on like that at all.

Yup thats what I suggested to him a standard 56-57" with a mini butt but again as has been said this will upset the balance and also most likely make the cue butt heavy. Ive convinced him that his ideal requirements are a bit OTT and managed to persude him to get a 59-60" cue. Myself am over 6' and my ideal cue length is a little over 58".

Seen a few on ebay for sale complete with case, mini butt and telescopic extension so I suggested he looks at them. Personally I have a 18 week wait for my TW cue to arrive LOL

Hi Chris, I did have 4 or 5 overlength cues from Riley's (original Riley UK made in Burnley, Lancs - not imported BCE Riley) cos I cleared them out when they went bust back end of 2002. I think I may have one left somewhere amongst my collection. From memory they were approx 60", Ebony spliced to maple - Riley Gold Medal? I think. I know they were centre split and, because of the length they would'nt fit a normal 2 piece case, only a Cue Craft Aluminium 2 piece case - just. What tip size does your mate like? Think they were 11mm. Cann get turned down to 10 or 9.5mm if necessary.. Let me know.... Working on photo of that 3/4 case for you... Will PM or email you later..:snooker:
