Best way to finish a sanded cue?

I've tried many things from linseed oil to differing forms of waxes,
I am just wondering what cue makers use to get that luster finish to the cues, without using the nasty cheap lacquer/varnish.

Also how do you fill the grain, after cleaning down the varnish from a cue?
