  • Weight for a cue.

    hi guys,

    i am ordering a 58.5 " JP Traditional 1pc.

can anyone advise me on the ideal weight of the cue, currently i am using a 18oz?

and does weighter cue gives more power?

    18 is probably right.
I play with a light cue because I need a light touch because I play UK 8ball with the cue too. My cue is just under 17 it was close to 16 but I had some more weight in it because felt too light for snooker.

They yanks say you get more power with a light cue because you can push it quicker.
You do seem to get a firm hit from a heavy cue though.
The stiffness of the shaft matters too.

    Generally extremes aren't good.

im no expert, but generally it seems accepted that with a lighter cue you can push through the ball quicker thus generating more speed. however you dont want something too light as it can cause you to move it about subconsciously when down on a shot. at least that's what i've found.
either way, whether light or heavy you can usually get used to it just through playing with it for a while.

If you are currently using a 18oz cue n you are feeling comfortable to the weight, then dun bother to change unless you feel that the cue weight is putting a strain on your shoulder.

As a regular Singaporean, unless you are more than 1.8m,i will highly recommend that you switch to a shorter cue. 57-57.5" will be a more regular length if your under 1.8m

I might not be right about the advise but if you are comfortable playing with a longer cue during long pot & close shot without major adjustment on the butt position then carry on.

If you dun mind a used cue, i have a frd who wishes to sell his JP traditional 58.5", 9.5mm & 18.2oz.

            I used to use a 58 cue.

Bottomline from my own experience, as a typical Sg-er's height, anything more than 58 is too long as a longer cue would require you to utilize more strength to generate more power, in short a shorter cue equates to more power in lesser effort.

The objective is to push the cue ball thru, but a lot of us are punching the ball hence causing it to "kick".

A lighter cue would enable you to "push thru" more effectively with lesser effort, hence you do not need a heavier cue to generate the power required to do say draw, spins and sides.

As long as you can push the cue ball thru effectively, the desired effect will be attained.

              hi ktan,

i think most snooker players will agree that a cue is a very personal item...

what's the ideal cue weight for me may be rubbish to u... same goes for the tip size, butt diametre, balance of the cue, the type of tip used, the wood used for the shaft, etc... no two cues will feel or play exactly alike... it all depends on your preference.

if you're already used to your cue and if it's still in good condition, i don't think there's a need to change it. it may be more worthwhile to work on your technique if you are trying to improve your game... or try using a different tip... but if you're adamant on changing or buying your own cue, try out a few different cues first and decide what's good for you... though admittedly that may be difficult as we do not have too vibrant a snooker scene here.

however, if you have the cash and you want a beautiful cue / cues, then there are quite a few cue makers and sellers on this forum who can help you part with your money... but caveat emptor!!

hope this has been somewhat helpful... cheers...

1.71m tall here, fat, ugly and have always used a 57.5inch cue. As do the majority of Brits - I would think, or those I know do. lol.
PS: The only one that I know that uses a longer cue, is 6feet 7inches tall (approx 2m).

                            Hi Damianlch

i have just read your message, and couldn't agree more with you, i am a cue maker "Wright Cues" and what you have said is exactly right. i find that to many people look to deeply in to how the cue should be. All cues are different and feel different, and people should be looking for what is right for them. The amount of people that say thats not right, that shouldnt be like this, this should be like that. Guys dont get me wrong, a cue should be right, but right for you, and feel like its part of your right/left arm.
people make to many excusses, and they should be working on there stance, keeping still and so on.
