  • Thick butt helps a loose grip?

Does a thick butt help with the loose grip?

If the butt diameter is thin, then one must grip it more tightly than normal to ensure that loose grip? If so, then the reverse is true too?? Because there's more of a cue there, and you don't have to grip so hard to attain that loose grip.

Then the thick butt would help the loose grip.

What were your experiences with thick and thin butts?

Ive played with both a fairly thin butt and a thick butt, personally i think your grip is what it is, its what you grow up with and its what you get used too rather than the size of the butt coming into play.

I found that i held the butt in the same way both on the thinner butt and on the thicker butt, i'm not saying that this is what everyone does, its from my own experience of both types of cues.

I understand fully where your coming from Johnny and IMO it's not the size of the butt, but the type of grip that the butt allows. It stands to reason that a thinner but would allow you to wrap the fingers around the butt more and in turn could cause you to grip the cue tighter than say a fat butt where the little finger is been push out and the tip of this finger is just sitting on or around the middle of the butt. You could how ever still choose the type of grip regardless of size???

this is a good thread, a wider butt would open yourr hand up more equaling a looser grip i feel however Cazmac1 is right above when he said

Personally, I feel a slimmer butt allows for a more relaxed grip; it allows your hand or last fingers to open up easier when pulling back. Wouldn't it more difficult to open up the grip when you have more butt to hold on to?

I'd say butt diametre of 31mm and upwards to be rather thickish... anything less than 28mm would be too slim, but I know Inoffthered would probably disagree...

Having said that, I guess it all boils down to personal preference. A person with much too tight a grip probably wouldn't loosen up much even with a different butt diametre. It's the technique or composure that needs looking in to, imo, and not so much the butt size.

I figure the butt diameter depends on the player's hand size. For instance, women should use a 27mm or 28mm but unless they have larger hands.

In general and in answer to your question though I find a large butt cue would make it more difficult to keep the grip relaxed however I don't think the size of the butt comes into it much (except for the size of the hands) and it really depends on how much and when in the delivery the player tightens the baby finger.

If you have a grip like Matthew Stevens or Mark Allen where your baby finger never touches the butt at all then I would think you would only need a butt diameter that fits your other 3 fingers comfortably
