  • visible "splice lines" on new cues.

    Hi all,

Just like to seek some advices from some experience cue makers or anyone who has his experience to share.

Recently bought 2 new cues from a reputated cue maker from uk. However, upon receiving the cues, i was pretty shock to be able to feel some roughness on the cue butt as i was running my palm through it . Upon closer look, i discovered that the "splice lines" in which the butt splices are joined together are very clearly visible in which caused the rough feeling.

This is my first time getting a cue from uk and previously i have them custom made from thailand. With my previous cues made from thailand, i have to say i had yet to recieve a new cues with "flaws" like this . Therefore i hope some knowledgable guys here could offer me their advice on whether am i making a fuss out of something normal.

    Thanks For reading...

Could be something to do with the climate affecting the wood or glue on the butt.

It would be the humidity, the butt wood has swelled very slightly with moisture and simply needs sanding back down and re-oiling.
Nothing a cue maker can do about this when sending to a country with such a radically different climate. I very much doubt it went out in that condition.

Have had a few cues like this with raised splices , sometimes the lines are so fine that they aint worth bothering with , actually i spoke to a well known cuemake who repaired one of these for me and he said the finer the lines the harder they can be to repair .

visible "splice lines" on new cues.

I had one made recently. It was perfect initially then after 3 weeks. A splice raised. No big issue. Took it back. He re sanded re oiled it. All good again.
          Always a pleasure

Took some pictures and sent to the cue maker for clarification. Just want to find out the exact reason for the obvious gap between the splices and not just pushing the all the blame to the cue maker. Will update when I get a reply.

While still waiting for the cue maker to reply my email, just found out there are fine cracks on other area of the cue butt other then the gaps between the splicing.
