  • Pernambuco wood

Anyone have tried using pernambuco as main butt splices?
After some basic research, my understanding of this wood is that its mainly used for the bows for string instruments.

    yes.

    it look sh*t.

it's actually a lovely wood, very orange, and i used it once to splice a whole butt instead of ebony. looked terrible. just like the cheap splices you see on old machine spliced cues.

would look ok in small sizes, spliced over ebony, but no more than that.

i still have a little of it, but i have not used it for 20 odd years.

      You still have that cue?
I recently came across a fountain pen made of it, the texture was fantastic.

I thought it comes in that dark brownish orange like all violin and cello bows do?

maybe, but just took a pic of what i could find and mine looks like this:

                      IMG_1968.jpg

quite orange as you can see.

the ebony/pernambuco combo was a 'tiger stripe' idea i had about 20 years ago (!) and still have in the workshop....

would look good as a front splice.

i also did one of these with ebony and pequia which is a very yellow wood. looks equally good in the combo form.

Don't know the exact term but I think I saw something like this on the craftsman cues website and they called it hologram wood. Think it was on a cue by King Cues or Phoenix, forget which one.

That sandwich of black and orange you've glued together, what do you do with it next, or how do you cut it for splicing please?
