  • Hairline crack on the splice of my cue

    Hi Guys,

I got my Mastercraft Retribution Cue completed and delivered to me in Late May. I reside in Singapore so the cue have travelled half way around the world. However, after a few months of play, I have discovered a hairline crack on one of the spilce of the shaft. It's a 3/4 cue so I believe the crack is caused by the joint. I have emailed the supplier but he said it is not a manufacturing fault. He suggested that I sand the crack with super fine sandpaper and oil it. Dave(cue maker of Mastercraft) has not reply my email though. I have read that sanding the cue is not good for the cue itself. So I am asking you for your opinions on how I can rectify the problem? Or anyone ever have such experience with Mastercraft's cue before?

    Thanks in advance!

Hairline crack on the splice of my cue

Don't think that's a crack, looks more like the edge of the splice but its lifting slightly from the ash.

i am surprised if it is a master craft cue, the surface looks so rough.
anyway, if you really want to fill the gap, use super glue, and sand it, and oil it. It will be perfect again

just looks to me look the splice has raised slightly, probably down to humid playing conditions, its not a manufacturing fault it can happen to any cue. sand it back with 1200 paper or 0000 wire wool. seal with sanding sealer, lightly sand then finish with raw linseed oil

Please dont sand it first. That is not a crack its just the splice lifting of the ash.

If you can get hold of a com pressed air hose then please blow out any loose fine dust out of that gap. Terry davidson has suggested a glue that might fill up that gap in one of my older threads or you could just email him

Another choice which is what i did is to take superglue after the dust has been blown out of that gap and fill it with superglue and then to carefully scrape and sand away the glue and it would be barely noticeable. seeing as you in Singapore you may have to do it yourself as I dont know of any cue makers or cue doctors who could fix that. I also think the cue is playable as is. Stand to be corrected.

If it doesn't affect play, I'd just leave it as it is... Can get messy if you do it wrong... botched cosmetic surgery comes to mind.

Not heard about keeping super glue gel in the fridge before, can I ask why? I assume that it makes the gel even more controllable?

it thins it - then you put into crack and as it warms it pulls it together.

because superglue only glues within a small temperature range - from memory, something like 10C to 40C ... so if you keep your opened tube of superglue in the fridge, it doesn't clog ...

I've never tried it but if you want to undo something that's been glued with superglue, if it's small enough to put in the fridge, leave it overnight and it will come undone easily ...

Alternatively, if it's too big to go in the fridge, I believe superglue is a bit like velcro ... very strong perpendicular to the "glue" line but very little lateral strength ... so try peeling the two glued pieces apart as you would do if they were velcro'd together ...

i have sand the cue and oiled it. The gap/crack is shorter now. used to be like 1 inch but it is about 0.5 inch now. Was a little skeptical about sanding so I didnt sand much. Thanks for all the help.

Did not opt to use superglue as the gap is really small. I am afraid that the glue can't get in and I would be spending most of my time sanding off the glue.
