  • Buying a Cue for my 14 year old son?

Was wanting to buy my son a cue for christmas, Most people have told me Peradon cues are the way forward for him, I was looking at the Joe Davis 2 piece cue for around £112 and the case was costing £20 from ABC Snooker on-line website

Any advice, tips etc would be most welcomed

    Thanks in advance

hello again Brian just looked at Baizecrafts site seem to be all Peradon supplies, although i think they might also stock cuecraft cues which are much better quality than peradon and value for money for a player starting out.

Also, you might find someone selling one on here 2nd hand and pick up a cracking deal. Although its for Christmas, the first cue doesn't need to be new, just needs to be a good playing cue that's in good condition

Thanks pal, I don't know much about buying different cues, I have always played just used the cues in what ever snooker hall I was in but for a 14 year old he is already making 30/50 breaks in most frames, I would love him to keep at it because he really loves the game

Thanks again, and any more tips/advice would be great..

Hi Mate, Im also originally from NI but living in Bournemouth now.

I would very much recommend buying a hand made cue from one of the chaps here as you will most certainly get much better value for money.

Go for around the 'usual' specs. 57-58" long, 17.5-18oz, 9.5mm ferrule. Balance 16-17". Ash shaft. You wont go much wrong with this.

I'd go for machine spliced 3/4 Pheonix (very painly pulling out bumfluff on the chin with a centre joint cue),
And the chespest ally case (80+45 - almost in budget!) at craftsman.

Youre son has a lot of potential , personally i would take him toGreenbaize or craftsman and let him pick a cue he likes even if it means waiting a while . Would be a nice xmas present .

On response to your other thread, just remembered, last time I spoke to joe, he had quite a few cues that he was selling. And you could try before you buy too

Yep this is a good idea as he will get to try out the cues in these places before he buys and has a much greater chance of finding something that feels right for him.

Thanks a lot folks, Youse have given me a lot more to think about, this forum has taught me more about cues in the last few days than I have ever heard before, thanks again.

We were at are local snooker club tonight, and his potting was terrible, when we got home he told me he keeps thinking about getting on a colour and as he strikes the cue ball he is still thing about where the white will be after the shot, if hes a few inches out he looks really disappointed, he has been watching a lot of break-building frames on utube and unless he pots a few reds and colours on every visit to the table he feels annoyed with himself, his safety play is terrible, in fact he never even thinks about it, when he gets to the table its just pot a red get on a colour, when a safety shot would be far better, he calls me boring when I snooker him!!!

Im not sure what sort of advice to give him sometimes?

One thing to say in that department is no matter what advice you give your son, he won't listen to it, it's what son's do! Even if it's the perfect advice, he'd much rather hear it from someone else than his father, i've been like it with my dad since i started playing! and i've no idea why!
