  • Hendry's old cue

I watched the Liverpool charity challenge 1997, when Hendry maxed in the decider.. Rex Williams was one of the commentators and he spoke about Steven's cue saying that it was very light at 16oz and he (Rex) "shouldn't of let it go", insinuating that he sold/gave it to Steven. Was he joking? Does anyone know the specs and history of Steven Hendry's old cue?

it was a powerglide connoisseur cue with a rex williams signature - nothing to do with rex himself!

Thanks adr, I remember hearing about this now.. They don't make them like they used to! It was a very light cue at 16oz, I know a lot of the cheaper cues are lighter but wonder how many top players now use cues below 17oz.

more than you might think - it's more about balance than weight.

I remember the commentator then mentioning its not about the weight of the cue. It was about the perfect timing Steven had to be able to manipulate the cue ball fully.

did rex have something to do with the company or his brother, maybe his comment was related to that?

Light cues are more popular for the pros and it must be an advantage because of the speed of the cloths to use a lighter cue to give you better feel. I think a lighter cue makes it easier to time the ball too, I prefer a 17.75 oz cue myself and mainly play on club tables that although fairly quick are nowhere near as responsive or fast as the tournament tables these pros play on. If I were to regularly play on tables with new cloths and table heaters I'd probably want to go down to 17oz as I'd probably be losing the cueball too much. Most top break builders use lighter cues, the exception being O'Sullivan at 18.3 oz. Most of the biggest scorers, Higgins, Trump, Murphy, Ding etc all use under 18oz cues, many around the 17oz mark give or take half an ounce.

I use 56.5"/15.6oz/15.3bp at the moment and like what adr said its more about the balance, Like Steven's powerglide looked to have a 17bp.. I remember a lot of the old cues in the club stamped mostly around the 16oz mark. I heard Taylor once saying O'sullivan used a 15.5 at one time.

ROS's current JPU is reportedly just over 18oz.
Not heard about any really light ones as you describe.

I'll dig-out the match that DTaylor mentions one of Ronnie's old cues being 15.5, unless someone else knows the quote.. But over 18 seems on the heavy side.

I would say that just over 18oz is regarded as an average weight in the modern snooker game.
with a range of "average" being 17.5-18.5oz
