Never owned or used a GBL but do own two phoenix cues and I have to say that for the money they are as good as anything on the market currently. IF GBL are better then it can only be marginally so because I don't really think you can improve much on the quality of phoenix cues. The only drawback is that the butt is lacquered whereas I don't believe GBL cues are but its easy enough to remove it if you have to. I'd say phoenix edge it because GBL recently had a bit of a price increase.

Hi, I have never used a Phoenix cue, but I do have a Gbl cue in my collection... it's a great playing cue and very well made, the splice work is spot on and is easily as good as Mike Wooldridge or Robert Osborne.. there prices have gone up a little but they are still cheaper than the John Parris standard range cues and are just as good if not better made in my opinion so still great value.. Stu is also a great guy to buy from.

GBL cues are top notch indeed, better finished in my opinion than Phoenix too.
I have never actually asked Stu, but if they were to do custom orders, you probably couldn't get a better cue from anywhere

Gbl are a bit more expensive than Phoenix, but there's a reason for that, they're better finished and are now getting used by some pro's, albeit the changing willy nilly type, though most thai brands are top quality for the money...

I have owned many GBL cues and been to craftsman cues and tried out the phoenix cues IMO there not in the same league as the GBL cues.

As I live in Leeds, I am lucky enough to be able to frequent Craftsman Cues on a fairly regular basis. Dave and Simon the owners sell Phoenix Cues, and for the money they are superb. Craftsman have a table on site so any cue can be "try before you buy" and I always spend a bit of time on the table whenever I pay a visit.
Now, to be fair, I have not had hold of a GBL cue, so am not the best qualified to use any comparison, but can honestly say the workmanship, wood quality and overall playability of Phoenix is really good especially when taking the price into consideration.
Not sure if this helps at all, but for a "mid-range" priced cue then in my opinion you wont go far wrong with a cue from this makers range.

I think general concensus is you can't go wrong with either choice but if money was the determining factor then Phoenix wins, if its finish your after then GBL. Shaft wise, splicing, exotic woods I think are on par, probably because they are both made in Thailand so possibly use same suppliers and who knows, could actually be all part of the same set up for all we know!

Stephen Maguire is currently using a GBL 1pc maple (C8 model).
He has won two ranking events while playing with it, UK PTC1 and the Welsh open last weekend.

Agreed. A couple of m8's recently picked up a GBL cue each. The finish and quality of the splicing is up there with the very best cue makers. Despite the price increase, they represent good value. Each to their own, but it didn't take them long to get accustomed to the new cues ( subjective ).
