  • Advice Please

    Hi all,

Im in a bit of a pickle, im not playing to well at the moment and im in two minds weather to try a new cue that is slighty longer at 59" or have mine lengthened. Ive had my cue for 15years and its a love/hate relationship at the moment, i love the weight and feel of it but im constantly feeling that just another inch on the end would help me as im 6ft 2in and have long arms.

So do i leave my cue alone and try a 59" or get my old faithfulish lengthened?

    Cheers all

I wouldn't do anything drastic! Try a longer cue first before you buy or tamper with your own... I'm your height with long arms too and I've settled on 59", though everyone is different so I would definitely try a few longer cues out first...

i'm guessing you were 6 foot 2 when you first got your cue 15 years ago?

how has your form been with the cue over the past 15 years?

Would love to try a 59" cue but they seem quite a rare beast on the second hand market.

I was 15 when i first got the cue, probably was around 6ft at the time, form wise only started playing again last year after a long break as my local club closed down.

If your cue has an sd joint fitted , try playing with a short 6" extention screwed in. Ungainly I know , but you would be able to move your grip further back and extend your bridge this would allow you to maybe see if a longer cue would suit.Better option than just getting your cue extended and perhaps ruining its balance.

What part of the world are you from? There are places where you can try before you you buy Greenbaize, Craftsmans come to mind if in England, the later has all different specs online that seem to go up in quarter inches, but Stu would probably have 59inch cue laying around as well...

what i was getting at was have you played well with it previously when you were playing regularly as if so it probably isn't the cue that's the problem now but you are also saying though you have had it for 15 years but had a long break so have you ever had a cue that you have truly got used to?

either way won't hurt to try a longer cue, sure there will be plenty of 59/60s on here that are available but it would be easier if you could visit a shop or maker with a good stock and try them before you buy but even then they are like shoes and take time wearing in though unless you play very regularly you can't really expect to get used to a cue quickly or get any level of consistent form

It does have an sd joint fitted and when i use my mini for stretch shots it feels more comfortable with my hand further back.

Im from Surrey/Hampshire, so only makers here with shops i believe are Parris and Osborne, was thinking not to spend a fortune and go for a less well known maker from here such as Owen/Travis/Butters etc.

Im with you on that one a bad workman always blames his tools, with regards to being used to it all i can say is that i know how it performs and cannot seems to play with anything else, but its always in my mind that it would just be more comfortable for me.

not so "less well known" on TSF
Are you anywhere near Aldershot (or was it Farnborough)?
I ask as I recently heard that the snooker club there (forgot the name for the mo) had some cues in stock, maybe worth a call to see what (if any) they had in.

I knew whatever way i tried to word it ie less established/well known i would get caught (no offence intended but you know what i ment)

The Soverign in Farnborough is my only local club now, have looked at there cues and they only keep low end 57 and 58" stuff.

                        Sovereign - that's it
ah, sorry, a friend said that they had some in but not sure of details.
The only other stockist I knew around here (in Ascot) shut down some years ago.

ps. have you tried Woking way? There seems to be a club there (recently had the Womens comp - see other thread) that could have stuff in?

Surprisingly there's not a lot of options of trying out different lengths around London, have you phoned John to see if he has anything in his shop? Well the good thing about getting a 59 inch made from scratch, if you don't like the extra inch, you could get it shortened no problem including adjusting the taper if need be...

the chinese sets on ebay are good value and you can re-sell them for what you paid for them if you don't get on with them and there are a few at 60" (you can ask the seller for 9.5/18oz or as close as) - just type 60" cue into ebay search, may as well give it a go at less than 70 delivered
