Hand-made cue tips??

Hi, has anyone attempted to make their own pool or snooker cue tips?

I have a really rigid piece of approx 6mm thick leather (I.ve been learning leatherworking for a few months), and i'm thinking it would be ideal for re-tipping cues.

An old cue is sitting waiting on me getting some suitable adhesive so i can try it out later.

Just wondering if anyone has had success, or whether the single layer of leather may not be dense enough? I see some of the more expensive tips are constructed of multiple thin layers of leather.

Would the softer tip help with spin?

The layered tips are laminated and the single layer pressed, as a rule pressed tips are softer, to an extent soft tips would help with spin but i believe it's more cue action related than with the density of the leather. I think there was a member(tomee strings) trying to make his own tips, don't know if he was successful or not, you could maybe pm him.

i bought a packet of 3 talisman wb laminated tips in the hard variety and they played way better than the blue diamond tip that i removed .................great confidence booster as you'll get more feel through your cue

Tried it tonight... tell you what... not bad at all!

Here are a couple of pics of one of the tips... One pic is rough-trimmed and the other is almost finished. (Ferrule also hadn't been polished in the pics)

The tip is pretty soft compared to the standard tips i've used and certainly sounds a lot different but plays surprisingly well.

Might try one of these on my cue when the current tip is past it's best.

Edit: If anyone wants to have a go, and cover postage, I'll send them a bit of leather.

Best tips i ever had were laminated ones made by Andy Hunter about 15 years ago,after 15 years of bugging him he has finally relented and is going to show me how to make them when he comes down here next month.Watch this space!
