• Unbadged Butters cue , ash / ebony / tulipwood with hidden joint

Looking to move on this fine cue by James Butters.

Spec is 57.9" ( 58" over tip ) long
Butt = 29.4mm
Tip = 9.4mm
Weight = 17oz
Balance point = 17.5"
Split at 13"

Splicing up to James's high standard, and the Hidden joint is hard to spot ( I suppose the clue is in the name ).

Cue is oil finished Ash with Ebony butt, and 4 Tulipwood splices.

Socket for mini butt present ( mini butt not included ).

Takes mini butts which fit Parris cues ( among others ).

Looking for £110 + postage, or open to swaps +/- cash.

This was the cue mentioned in the last sentence of the maple sale ( and shown in the last picture )

Why does Butters badge some cues and not others? Are the unbadged ones not up to snuff?
The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

from what I understand he bought a small batch of badges years ago and used them sparingly
the unbadged cues are not necessarily not as good as the badged
I believe he has got more badges now

He has some old oversize badges which he got years ago, he now has to spend ages trimming them to size.

That was always the impression I got. He sold many unbadged cues which hadn't really gone to plan and he gave up on them and sold them unbadged. Quite a few I saw had the hole drilled for a butt joint that was never fitted. Shaft arrows didnt properly align with the ebony finger etc.

If he wasnt happy he didnt put a badge on them. He has of late been badging everything as they fetch more money and I guess times are hard.

Sean used to do the same. sold lots of unbadged cues which were a bit off then badged a few he was happy with. Understandable and the right thing to do in my opinion. Once youve perfected the art is the time to stick your name to something. Dont get me wrong these are good value for money cues if your on a budget.

James makes some fantastic cues but if your after one, get a badged version. It will certainly have a better resale value if you ever come to sell it.

Sorry to say mate but most of that is rubbish, James is a good friend of mine and I get the pick of his cues. He is not running a business he is just a retired guy who enjoys working with wood and is not in the least bothered if he sells them or not. I have nagged him for years to get badges but he is not interested. The green ones he is using just now are old ones which are to big and he spends ages grinding them down to fit. I yesterday sold what he described as the best cue he has ever made and it is indeed a cracker but no badge so to say the unbadged ones are rejects is rubbish.

None have been malicious though to my knowledge, but the effect is the same.
