Don't know if this is the right answer but it's easier to make a butt out of one piece of wood than splices. Why don't they use longer splices on one pieces, I'm not sure.
Most of ebony blanks are about 19 ins long high is what most one piece butt lengths are 18_19 ins, 3/4 cues are generally about 18 in jointed for bal around joint area,so you get 4_7 in splices on 3/4.
