  • Shortening a cue by 2" or buying a new cue

I bought a John Parris cue just before christmas. It is 57" but it is too long for me. It is a lovely cue, the elite model with tulip wood, but to fit me it probably needs shortening. I saw a coach at the south West Snooker Academy today and he thought I needed a length of 55". I am 5ft 4 by the way or maybe more like 5ft 3.

John Parris did say to me that if I wanted it shortening then I could send it to him and he would shorten it but I'm wondering whether I might be better to have a new cue made up for me at 55" and sell my existing cue.

no no and no, forget about selling it, if you think its a lovely cue just chop it off at the tip end and retaper it

What length was your old cue previous to buying the JP? Were you using a 57" cue or was it shorter? Seems a big step to think you need a cue 2 inches shorter.

Can't you borrow a shorter cue from some one at the academy and see how you get on with it first

My previous cue was 57 inches, simply because this was the standard length. When I cue there is a lot of cue out the back and it does feel unbalanced. The coach said today that my cue was too long.

The problem is there are never any shorter cues to try.

John Parris did indicate that a shorter cue would suit me and said I could send it to him to have it shortened.

Could either get it chopped or have a shorter butt made, obviously a shorter butt is the more expensive option that will take longer.

Well what time frame would JP take to shorten it

Thought I remembered you from another thread, you got in to your county pool squad using your old cue or the new JP cue, it can't be that bad. How long have you been playing? I'd have thought you would be used to 57" by now.

I would sell it on and stalk eBay, 55" cues are quite common and extremely undervalued, you'll never get back anywhere near what you put into it and it will not come back anywhere near as you remember it.

That's right, but it does feel a little unbalanced with so much cue out the back and the coach said a smaller cue would suit me. I'm really not sure what to do now. I've been playing with a 57" cue for a fair few years but I've been advised a shorter cue would be better. Doesn't Dott use a 55"cue and I think he's slightly taller than me.

I'd be shocked if taking 2 inches off your cue is going to see massive improvements in your game if you've been playing for years but now the seed has been planted that you need a much shorter cue your always going to have it on your mind. I don't play pool but I know with snooker if you can't shake something from your mind it can effect your game massively. I agree the best thing is to borrow a cue if possible or buy a cheap cue at that spec or something cheap you could get adjusted.

Big Andy Gib would be able to tell you Dots specs as he won the world tile with a cue of Andy

Did your coach actually tell you it was the cue?
