hi there new to just joined tsf just got my jp ultimate back just had it refinished and the butt made smaller 31mm to 30mm its to small can i make it back to 31mm with veneers and splices

Yes, you can mate. John should have no problem adding splice & veneer to get the butt back to 31mm.

Why dun you take your time n get used to the thinner butt? It may take a while but by adding splice & veneer will cause your cue weight & balance to be off-set.

Just an advise.

how do i measure the butt of the cue, is it the thickest part ?
also can yer buy the tool for measuring tips an butts from somewhere ?

Butt diameter for me is comfortable at 29mm and I have two Trevor White cues here with that diameter.

Buy a digital caliper and measure the butt diameter right at the end of the cue just before it bevels for the SD socket.

Hi Longbomber,

The diameter of most cue butts is variable, although not by much in terms of actual measurements.

If you have played with various cues over time, you'll no doubt have noticed that some feel slimmer and some feel thicker. Generally, an average size of butt for a snooker cue would be approx 30mm, with anything feeling small, usually being of 29mm or less. When this size gets below 28mm, the butt will fell exceptionally small, and will not be to the liking of many players.
Conversely, a cue with a butt of anything above 31mm will feel quite thick, with anything above perhaps 32mm feeling really large, and again, probably too big for the vast majority of players.

So, in summary, most cues will have a butt between 28.5mm and 30.5mm in diameter, with the smaller size feeling pretty small and the larger size feeling pretty thick. The average for most cues readily available today would be approximately 29mm - 30mm.

This sort of measurement will feel best for most people.

Oh, by the way Longbomber, I haven't forgotton you and will sort a reply to your mail in the next half an hour.

I am learning much from this forum. I may also be "dropping you a line" Mr. White, in regards to a new cue.

HI Willytan, I've got used to a really slim butt ( 25mm ) and th upshot of that is, I find anything else too thick, although I'm sure most ppl here will say a 28mm or 29 is average size.

I'll persevere tho and hope to get used to a 27 or 28mm butt

I started to go down the thin butt route and found that you have to use a different grip than with the thicker butt.
Without going into the details with a thin butt the best grip is that of SH and with the standard butt a grip more like RO is better. This is what I found and I'm now using a 29.5 mm butt and using ronnie type grip which I find gets me through the ball nicely.
