i was just wondering how flexible the shaft of a cue should be, what i mean is if you hold the butt of the cue in one hand and place the other hand at the top of the shaft and slightly push your hands in opposite directions the cue will bend slightly, so i was wondering how far down the shaft you could try this where it shouldnt bend at all.

I myself like a shaft that is stiff but not too much. I find a really stiff shaft pushing the cue ball off line too much when applying side spin.

I like to have a taper which allows me to apply side english and really move the cue ball around the table without too much effort, but stiff enough for me to "punch" in the long shots consistently. I like a shaft stiff enough for me to feel a solid hit on my center ball hit (top, middle bottom) with predictable response.

Some shafts are too soft and the cue ball becomes hard to control; some shafts are too stiff which offers no feedback and sensitivity.

Onr big thing I have noticed is when I need to apply long table lenght power follow on the cue ball. Different taper balance and so forth really make a difference with my consistency of this shot.

does anyone know how flexible or bendy an average ash shaft should be before it is considered whippy?

i dont think there is a set point of where exactly a cue should bend to etc.. to be considered whippy. cue makers may have their own "guide", but id say if youve tried quite a few cues youd become familiar with what youd consider whippy

the trouble with this is its all subjective. what i feel is just the right amount of flex you might find too stiff etc.........
