  • Finding the Perfect Cue

    Hi Friends,

With today's market, there are so many capable cue manufacturers/makers. In the list that I am about to type are some of the cue 'makes' that if I were to consider buying a new cue that I would look into their range: Mike Wooldridge, John Parris, Trevor White, Cue Craft, Unique Cues, O'Min Cues, Welsh Pool Trading Cues, Craftsman Cues, Master Cue, MasterCraft Cues, Robert Osborne, Andrew Ramsey, Coutts Cues, Acuerate Cue (possibly!), Gravity Cue and I could carry on, all of those companies/cue makers produce very high standard snooker cues. There is just so much choice nowadays.

My question is how do you find the perfect cue for yourself? There is so much choice these days. Do you just go with the specifications that you know you want, for example 10mm tip, ??mm butt diameter, However many shaft arrows if you have ash, type of wood etc and just choose a good cue maker or do you go around all different cue makers finding the people that can make the best cues.

I understand that a cue is not what is going to make you into a world champion but I think it is important to get the right and perfect cue for yourself.

Also, here comes another problem for me, as I live in Plymouth in England, there are hardly and snooker shops if not any at all where I can try out a large number of cues, if I was to actually try cues I would have to go on a long trip up the country which isn't convienient.

So what can I do? Do I just look for a well respected cue maker and buy a cue with the right specifications? But then you would always be paranoid thinking that there is a cue out there better than the one you already have as snooker players are paranoid!

I know it is all about what you get used to but I am a believer in finding the perfect cue and that would be difficult for me as I live 'down south' in England.

    Any help would be appreciated,

    bongo.

    perfect cue

from my experience this cue doesnt exsist, i have spent alot of money in search of it, its like finding the grail

what i have found out is a cue kinda grows on you, if u pick it up and pot a few balls it will do. dont expect to pick up a cue and say thats 100% the cue for me, those who do are very fortunate.

Matty you are so right. Its like anything in life. Id love a woman who does not moan, loves cooking, does not mind if im playing pool 3 hrs a night.....but hey!, beggers cant be choosers.

Even if you do find or order your perfect cue, your mind will always be thinking "What if it was a little lighter/heaver, or the tip bigger/smaller etc..." and that is the problem. If you are comfortable with what you got, stick with it.

        Hi mate,

My advice would be to try a cue if possible before buying.

Take me for example I had what was for me the perfect cue which I foolishly sold a few years back I have had countless cues made since with the same length, tip size, butt diameter, weight, chevrons down the shaft but have never been able to find a cue that plays the same even though the dimensions have been exactly the same.

Finding the perfect cue is half chance so if you come across it dont be a dime bar like me and make sure you keep hold of it.
Just because its old, doesn't mean its worth a fortune!!

Thank you for the advice so far, but my problem is that I can't really try out cues unless I go on a trip for quite a few miles! And I definately would want a new cue not second hand.

dont be too picky about new and old cues, try them all out if u have chance , what is one mans poison is another wine

u might find a second hand one what pays perfectly, and is well worth the travel costs to try one out, not trying before ya buy can be costly

i spent quite a bit like that

I 've got my perfect cue, and my perfect case now but the cue is a one piece and the case a 3/4. So my 2nd perfect cue which was not perfectly perfect but prettier than my perfect cue fits perfectly in my perfect case.

                Hope that's perfectly clear.
