  • I need the Snooker forum members help please .

Hi Forum members , some of you you may know that I have just gone self employed as a billiard table fitter after 37 years in the trade , I feel that I have helped and advised members over tables issues and information to the snooker forum since 2007 , what I would like to ask is a little help back in return , I am trying to climb the google rating for hits on my web site to get me on the first page , if members in the UK and abroad reading this could just spend a little time reading my web site I would much appreciate this , I am also doing a blog on my web site and photo album of various tables and billiard antiques . :snooker:

just google gcl billiards or go to http://www.gclbilliards.com

    many thanks
    Geoff

I've just googled "gcl billiards" and had a look too ... nice site ...

one thing made me smile ... in your blog post about The Snooker Forum, you say "so if you have a night to troll through the snooker forum under tables section , I am sure you will find it an interesting read"

some might say we have enough trolls on TSF already ... so perhaps "trawl" or "read" might be better ... I'm only joking of course but you don't want to get banned for encouraging trolls to visit

Yeh take youre point so will change it to read as some do just that , they just like to read threads .

As for the web site , it is not a too fussy site , I was advised to not overcrowd it with too many windows and choices , straight to the point of what I have to offer , then a blog for interesting articles , an introduction on myself and qualifications , a photo album , and contact info .
there are too many web site's these days offering too many choices and that's when you get lost , I am not here to sell pool tables at extortionate prices when you can buy them almost direct on ebay for 2/3rds of the money ,Expensive cue's leave that to the specialists , ok balls and chalk and other smaller items , but mainly the main reason , a Table recovering Rerubbering service / logistics etc .
I am a snooker and Pool table fitter thats what I am selling .

Geoff I can see that you have put some hard work into the site so please do not take this too hard!

If you want to be a Google leader and be on the first page you are going have to ditch the CMS system you are using and either hand code the site which would be get you the best results or use a more modern CMS system.

SEO failings on your site are no Keyword or Description META tags, no accessibility options like Tab Index's, Skip Navigation, Access Keys....., your keyword density on your home page needs to be around 14%, you would be better off putting your about page as your home page.

Google recently made changes to the way it scores sites for search engine results and one of the major changes that effects everybody is back linking! I see that you link to TSF which is great (Thank you) but if I were to link back to you Google would cancel both of those links out, the best way these days to do link exchanges is a 3 way exchange, so you link to me, I link to say Pro Snooker Blog and Pro Snooker Blog links to you.

The blog is a great move as the search engines like content that changes on a regular basis and you may find that your most common landing page(s) will be those on your blog.

Get a Facebook page made up and a Twitter account, every time you make a new blog post Tweet it and put it on your Facebook page, you can automate this through RSS feeds and a site called IFTTT.com this is how I automate threads fromt he coaching section to be posted onto Twitter and Facebook.

I would be happy to give you an hour of my time to advise you of best practices and what CMS system to use if you wanted to give me a call?

Most of my website appear on the first page of Google for specific keywords and geographic keywords and it is all done with basic SEO techniques.

I was going to post a link to the Page Rank system, which is what I thought google used:
                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank

But it seems Ferret has better/more up to date information I would listen to him.

From memory it's all about high profile/ranked sites linking to you, and it's even better if the search terms people might use are in the text for the link, from memory. Ferret may correct me now
"Do unto others 20% better than you would expect them to do unto you, to correct for subjective error"

Yeah sort of correct, there are actually over 250 things you need to do correctly, if you at least get 50 of them correct you are well on your way to getting a high ranking but you can also get them all wrong and also get a high ranking but that only happens to websites which are publicised on TV or have a huge number of hits like websites for films, TSF or even World Snooker which is the worst site I have seen for bad SEO but they are still top when you search for Snooker on Google.

If you Google "Snooker" TSF should be on the first page or at the top of the second page, this does depend on where you are in the world though.

I thouht it was done on how much you were willing to pay google per click through? That must be the sponsored links presumably.

I am getting enquiries and confirmed future bookings so something is working .

Hi salty , We had in our Billiard hall 6 new Raper tables installed in 1981, maybe youre father was one of the fitters doing that work as we had to get the hall up and running on time we just let Rapers set the new tables up , we had 18 full sized tables in that hall , the Hall was in Nottingham on Newark street , top floor , two floors up from the rear pavement ,but we had a lift to get all the slates and most of the woodwork up there, many thanks for the good wishes , I am finding my feet and doing ok at the moment , it is in the winter that most of the work come's in .
