A NEWPORT Pagnell cueman may not have qualified for the next stage of the English Amateur Snooker Championship but he certainly got his money’s worth.
Franky McGovern took an epic seven hours to complete his two matches at the London and South East regional event at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, Croydon
The 42-year-old’s 4-3 first-round victory over Scott Robertson lasted three-and-a-half hours, as did his 4-2 defeat by Simon Dent.
“I really enjoyed it,” said McGovern. “I never played to my level but, that apart, it was very good.
“I’m looking forward to some more tournaments this year.”
Dent (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex) was then beaten 4-2 by 21-year-old Billy Castle (Marchwood, near Southampton) in a quick-fire match-of-the-day that featured five breaks of more than 50.
“My match with Billy was over in an hour and a half,” pointed out Dent, who is through to the quarter-finals of the English Masters Championship.
“On top of that, I am older and like to have a think!”
Castle will be joined in the last-16 south at the South West Snooker Academy, Gloucester, on April 26-27, by Bradley Jones and Charlie Walters (South Croydon); Matthew Glasby, Ryan Causton and Sydney Wilson (Southend); John Rees (Ware, Herts); ex-professional Michael Georgiou (Forest Hill, London); Ashley Beal (Maresfield, East Sussex) and Matthew Ford (Bracknell).
The southern and northern winners will then meet during the EASB Finals Weekend at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds, on June 7-8.
But spare a thought for non-qualifier Zak Surety (Basildon, Essex), who fired in breaks of 100, 110 and 71 in a 4-0 hammering of Jon Charlton (Haslemere, Surrey) and added 79 and 101 in a 4-3 defeat by Damian Wilks (London).
