When the white ball is tight on the cushion do you always have to raise your cue?

No, try not to raise the butt of the cue; the cue should be as level as you can get it. As you address the cue ball the under side of the tip should brush the cushion, there should be a visible chalk mark on the cushion where you played from. Another tip is to shorten the back swing as this elements errors.

Yup couldnt agree more with the above mate, another thing is perhaps shorten your grip length on the cue perhaps 3-6" from the bottom of the cue, will help it feel a bit more comfortableBack at snooker after many years away.
Highest Match Break 53.
Highest Practise Break 78.

Echo wat the above has said. Grip the cue farther up the butt than you would normally and remember the theory is the same as when you are using the rest, keep it as simple as possible. Try not to do anything that would require you to cue down on the white as this would amplify the effects of any unwanted side you put on the ball.sigpic A Truly Beakerific Long Pot Sir!

Your fine unless only a tiny part of the tip is left.
Mike laminated tips have a black ring to tell you when its time to change the tip, but I think Mark Williams in particular was using a very very worn down tip during the masters.
