I don't think you can just choose a side of the chin to cue under, i thought it was to do with which one is your dominant eye !

I'm not so sure. I think while we might have a dominant eye we actually use both to aim. I suspect we might prefer one over the other by some amount from "not at all" to "quite a lot", but to be at the "quite a lot" end you have to actually have bad vision in one eye. So, I reckon most people are fairly balanced.

That said, Terry got me to get down on a shot aiming the white to the edge of the pocket leather on a distant pocket, then close first one eye and then the other. With one eye open my cue looked to be aimed at the leather, with the other it looked slightly off. Now, whether that tells me my dominant eye, or whether that tells me which eye I had closer to the line of aim at the time, I'm not sure.

So, perhaps all we can say is that, if you have a slightly dominant eye you want to make sure it is closer to the line of aim in order for the dominant/default picture that you 'see' to be 'correct'.. but I suspect that with practice you can teach yourself to favour one eye over the other, like how if you concentrate you can see the hourglass and then the faces in this:
