Putting pressure on the cue

Was just watching the trump \ o sullivan match from the ptc last november and noticed when trumps playing a screw shot he seems to put a lot of downward pressure on the cue, so much that it visibly bends before he hits the shot.

If you go to 27:45 where hes playing the blue you can see the cue is bending considerably. Is that a normal thing to do while playing? Can't say ive ever noticed that kind of reaction from a cue before outside of people breaking in 9 ball. Good thing to do or?

Yes there is bend in the cue he must be pushing down the cue into the V of his bridge hand with his grip hand. I would also be interest in comments from other members.

I wouldnt have thought its a good thing to do personally, like you though awaiting comments on it

Ugh, I would HATE that cue. I hate whippy cues and that one looks like it has been heated in a microwave before that shot.

Comment for the vid though, never seen anything like that before.

i thought you meant a slight bend that would be hard to see but that's anything but ! Never seen anybody bend a cue like that when playing. Is this a secret to his amazing cue power ?
surely cant do his cue much good ? I too im interested to read other comments.

I wouldn't say he has amazing cue power really, like most pros a lot of the shots they pull off they wouldnt get anywhere near the same ball reaction on a bog standard club table. The conditions they play in enhances their shots quite a bit.

when i first saw that i thought he cant be opening his grip when extending fully back and thats where the pressure and therefore the bend is coming from,but just after, he goes in off from a split on another blue and you can see his grip has opened, so it must just be a very whippy cue, his timing must be excellent i would have thought to use a cue like that.

Im suprised John Higgins has a chin left the way he presses down into the cue. His Chin probably has a layer of skin on it that makes kevlar look like ricepaper.

Yup, looks like thats how he prefers his cues with a bit of whip to them.

Think cue must be quite whippy and quick,pro tables do enhance the reaction of the cue ball. Having said that judd does having amazing cue power and there are probably only a handful of pros who can cue accurately with that much power.

There is a player in the club I play in that does this on almost every shot, it is part of his timing. And he is one of the top players in my country.

Your cue does not have to be very whippy to do this. Me and my mates have tried to imitate his actions and we can all get our cues to bend like that!

It is really interesting how this can come about though. When I first heard of this cue-bending phenomenon I thought it was just an optical illusion given the camera angles, but after watching more pros and this player closely this is actually a common thing? I believe Ding does this too, even Ronnie if I'm not wrong.

I would think that the reason for this is just so much of the discipline to keep your upper body still even when the cue bends during the final back swing, it still gets delivered straight upon the strike? And also due to the long back swings for power, those pros who don't drop their elbows during this back swing will definitely bring the butt of the cue up, thus bending it when their head is not moving.

Judd has one of the most wonderful cue actions. It is very long, smooth, piston like, super straight. Watch his next 10000 shots. I don't think you'll see him bend that cue again.
