  • Hitting it softly

    Hi

I have been facing and recognising a problem in my game but not exactly sure how to rectify it so looking for some tips and help. My friend has told me that I play many of my shots with too much power. I sometimes want to play a soft shot but end up jabbing at it or playing it too soft. I was wondering if there were any practise routines to help with playing shots in a controlled/ softly manner.

Any help would be great thanks

Its practice, buddy and you need to master the stun run through shot, encourages a player to stay away from those tricky rollies..

Reds and colours line-ups - They prevent you from putting too much speed on shots as you try to avoid disturbing the layout. Dinky little stun and light screw shots.

Even 4 reds between black and pink helps you keep the white contained.

For an exercise place the pink on spot and the cueball 1ft behind it straight-in and try and roll the pink to the very edge of the top pocket. Always aim for centre pocket.

Once you master that then try and use stun-run-through and pot the pink at pace and try and get the cueball to the very edge of the pocket. Once you get that move the cueball back another 6" and try it again and then another 6" after that.

Always place the cueball in the same spot for each series of shots.

The other good one is a 3/4-ball blue to the middle and using soft screw attempt to get the cueball on the brown and pink spots respectively. Then try to get the cueball 6" before the brown and pink spots and then 12" before the spots. Try and find your limit by using soft screw and potting the blue at pocket weight and see if you can keep the cueball from moving over 1ft or so.

Thanks Terry!! I will give it a go at the club tonight.

My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
          I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)
