ROYAL LONDON WATCHES TO SPONSOR GRAND PRIX

    24 Aug 2006 10:28:00

World Snooker is delighted to announce that Royal London Watches will sponsor one of the sport's major tournaments, the Grand Prix, for the next three years.

The world ranking tournament, one of the four events televised each season by BBC Sport, will be known as the Royal London Watches Grand Prix.

A seven figure sum will be invested by Royal London Watches over the three-years of the agreement.

This year’s event runs from October 21 to 29 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre and features the top 32 players in the world rankings as well as 16 qualifiers.

Defending champion John Higgins, world No 1 Stephen Hendry, World Champion Graeme Dott, Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ken Doherty, Mark Williams, Ding Junhui and Steve Davis will be among those battling for the trophy.

Royal London Watches produces a high quality range of ladies and gents watches. It is part of the Condor Group which was established over 60 years ago. The company’s reach is extensive and continually growing, exporting to over 20 countries world wide.

Two-times World Champion O’Sullivan said: "I’m glad we’re getting new sponsors on board, especially for the major BBC tournaments, and moving in the right direction."

Doherty, the 1997 World Champion and current world No 2, added: “It’s great to have a title sponsor for a tournament with such a rich history. The players are proud to be associated with a company as prestigious as Royal London Watches.”

Sir Rodney Walker, chairman of World Snooker, said: “This is an exciting time for snooker and this key deal is a further example that the sport is making vital progress away from the table.

“One of our central goals is establishing major headline sponsors for each of our BBC tournaments and we are well on the way to achieving that ambition, with further announcements to come soon.”

David Stokes, Sales Director of Royal London Watches, said: "Royal London Watches is extremely pleased and proud to be associated with such a high profile sport. We feel snooker reaches out to everyone, it is a sport that most people can play and enjoy.

“Equally, Royal London Watches has developed a range of quality watches, suitable for most age groups. We are also delighted to announce that we will be launching the first Official Licensed World Snooker Watch in October.

"We are looking forward to working with World Snooker in making this tournament a resounding success."

Sounds good. Royal London Watches is a slightly classier name to be associated with than a few others (although I think they're made in Hong Kong ). The most important thing though is what this translates to in terms of prize pots.

Should be interesting to see whether this boosts the prize pot. I can't remember what the WSA originally allocated to the Grand Prix, it was in the last snooker scene I think? I do know it's been £400,000 for the last few years and around £600,000 when LG was sponsoring. A 'seven figure sum over three years' should mean something like £500,000 with associate sponsors, ticket sales, TV rights etc all added in. Moving in the right direction Rodney .

now we will be able to time ronnie doing a 147 in 1 minute 12 seconds with our new watches....

...and we can moan that theres not enough numbers on the watch to time ebdon playing one shot.

Royal London Watches sounds a bit cheap to me. Like they have come from Delboy's suitcase in Peckham market.

Cartier or Breitling would have been better I agree on the other sponsors being a bit tackey. 888 and Saga are not real class companies, is it? One is linked with gamblers like Thorne and the other is about folks who are past it!

I still think IKEA should sponsor the Welsh Open and the players should have to assemble the tables themselves. In front of the crowd. Imagine what a publicity it would generate!

i think there should be a tournament where simonis (sp?) speed cloth sponsor the event, and the cloth used on the table.

also, no rests or spiders etc....the players have to climb the table and play their shots if they cant reach

Though I dont like their beer, it would be good to have a big international company as a sponsor. Good idea!

..and the table would fold like a cheap tent after 1 hours play

                            LOLLLLLLLLL!!!

Reminds me of that story of Cyril. Terry and Doug playing snooker on mount snowdown. They had to break off with the rest, as the top of the table was around Terry's chin!

Well, I have never paid more than £40 for a watch. More than so is just a waste of money IMO, as long as your not planning to have the rest of your life!

They call me stingy, but I prefer economical!
