  • Annother question on handicaps

I have covered this subject before in another thread but, I am now wondering if anyone knows how a handicap sytem works in regards to doubles matches. The system is straightforward for singles matches but I'm not sure about doubles. I have heard that some only allow for half of the difference in handicaps to be applied.

Any input will be much appreciated, thank you.

Could you average it out? It's a good question I wouldn't have thought if that problem.

My league add the two folks handicaps together then divide by two. EG Scratch player playing with a plus 10 player means their doubles handicap would be plus 5.

I believe that it is counter productive to use frame points for handicapping. As this changes the natural flow of a frame. For example, the player that receives the start, will try to put colours safe so that their experienced opponent has a more difficult task of compiling a break. Which in turn also drastically reduces the possibility of the handicapped players chances to score also.
A solution would be to just award a frame headstart. So as not to interfere with the natural flow of a traditional playing style. Just my opinion.
        Cheap and Cheerful! 😄

I just think handicaps are usually so heavily weighted in favour of the lesser player.
For instance a century break player's handicap is typically assuming they're going to make a 70+ break every frame wheras a lesser player let's say not capable of making a 20 break doesn't have to do improve much at all/can possibly beat their expected level by fluking the odd ball.
Player's who've put in hours of practice or are more talented are too heavily penalised, I hate handicapped events and have stopped entering them.

If the handicaps are calculated and adjusted over time based on results they eventually get a lot fairer. I believe that handicaps should mean that all players have an even chance of winning so long as they play well.
When my local Sunday night handicap started it was always the low handicap players who won it as they were more used to tournament play. They could afford to play a bad frame and win even with their B game.
Over time the low handicappers got cut and the high handicappers started to win their fair share of matches.
You got to remember it’s only a bit of fun. For serious snooker you have to play with everyone playing off scratch.

In most clubs if you didn't have handicaps you wouldn't have a comp. Players won't, for long, just donate their twenty five pound or whatever the entrance is, just to get thrashed by a ton machine who walks away with the money every week.
