  • Riley stamp marks

I've read on a few sites about the reasoning behind the numbers stamped on Riley cues..by that I mean the 1,2,3 And 4 stamps under the letter. It ranges from a wood stock...the drying shed and bench number. But what about it being a grade for stiffness or whippiness of the shaft..obviously billiards was still massive in the 30s , and the cues for both sports are certainly different.Im thinking a more springy cue is required for billiards ..whereas a stiffer cue may be better for snooker..hemce a stiffness grade...any thoughts or theories welcome

As a fllow on to this...I have 4 E.J.Riley snakewood cues which coincidently are numbered 1-4.The no1 is very springy and vibrates when tapped against my palm by about 4 inches at the tip..whereas the no4 moves by not more than half an inch sideways

Correction to the last blog...it's the number 1 that's very stiff and the no4 that's very springy
