In the old days there were many "Working men's clubs". These were private members' clubs and were owned by their members. In practice they were co-operative societies for the purchase of beer. Entry was restricted to members. The drinks in them were appreciably cheaper than in a pub. In practice they were all members of the CIU. That meant that a member of any other CIU member club could use a club. So if a member happened to be away, for example, on holiday he, or she, could still get the cheaper drinks etc.
I thought some of the younger members might not be aware of the above.王可
